Working on Spurs Compendium

Question for the more experienced guys here. I used to run a rope wrench if I would pre set a line when spurring up a tree but a few weeks ago some of my gear walked away and my wrench was in that bag. Until I get a replacement I was thinking about using a ascender I have (grivel A&D I believe) that is able to be used for descent as well where it has a opening similar to a belay plate. So if I needed to get down quick I put a bite of rope through and capture it with a carabiner. Then disengage the cam and rappel. I don’t plan to “work” off of this but really only use it to belay my ascent and double as a means of quick escape. Is this practical/safe? I know there are dangers of the teeth on a ascender messing up the sheath on a rope in the case of a fall but if I use a neck tether I could keep the slack out and limit any dynamic fall I feel and keep risk at a minimum. Any thoughts? On descent working the spar I could set up a adjustable friction saver unless I pair the ascender with a prussic back up similar to a third hand for rock climbers and rappel to where I can set up again and cinch the climb line. What are your thoughts? Should I just put together an adjustable friction saver and practice ascending with it until I replace my srt set up or could this become a permanent solution?

This is obsolete.

You can't ascend with it.

My main concern is just working down a spar. Most of the time I ascend on a double line so I can throw my climb line to advance and work the tree. I just want a better solution for working down a bare spar. I don’t have a friction saver so would need to put one together and I’m in the mindset that when you add more parts then there’s more that can go wrong. The ascender idea was to have a back up if I pre set a line and could use it as a back up and it doubles as a descender especially if I have a hitch below it already and put the bight of rope through the plate style opening.

Most climbs recently I’ve spurred up about 20-25 foot then start advancing my line so if I have a issue I have a emergency escape but when I had my wrench I would preset the line and have that as my emergency back up from the start. I prefer working the tree with the hitch climber pulley where I don’t have much gear but spar work is the only thing that trips me up when it comes to spur work.

You can cinch your mrs system to the trunk( I like a running bowline with a backup) then add friction below your hitch by putting a bight of your climb line thru a d and capturing it with a carabiner. It’s not super smooth but it works
