X-Rings on 5/8" 3-strand

More is betta, we are imperialists.

But it makes for a nice rope, never understood why 3 strand was favored. Could be hockeling? Twas a thing with spur climbing fliplines
I was looking around, and see that there is also such a thing as a 4 strand braid, which I find intriguing. Is splicing 4 strand twisted rope basically the same as 3 strand? Does 4 strand hockle worse than 3? That'd be a deal breaker, as 3 strand is already hockly enough.

Well, that certainly makes a good case for getting and looking through those catalogs. I realize now that Friedrich didn't actually say a tight eye, as I had assumed.

Gotta do something with the tail, better than a dead end.
4 strand was used for flip lines where a length of cable was twisted into the middle like a core, aka steel core flip line was born.
The splice is prettier too.
@Muggs have you played with tapering the splice tails. Is that hardlay?

I tapered this one a few years ago. Decided it wasn't worth the extra effort.

I've heard of steel core 3-strand before, didn't know it was called 4-strand. That would interesting to make...
