Gear bags backpack?

My problem with backpacking packs, are they flop terrible..arb packs stand up to flake ropes easily and hold hardwear in specific spots for easy access. Harness and helmet holds easily and handsaw has a safe spot. Only thing I do not carry in it are my falteimer cubes. I just upgraded to a 65l arbortec pack, from a 55l which lasted 3 years of hard use. Still has life , but hey....View attachment 91319

IDK….. if I could put 40 or 50$ in my wallet after shipping I’d be pretty happy with that. Open to trades too.

If I had to guess it’s in the medium/large category. Will confirm before I leave the house today.

Don't get a pack too small. Pile up all ofyour gear, including throwlines and food/water. do some rough math to get a cubic dimension.

Don't get a pack too big. You'll always fill it with...whatever.

Couldn’t find any markings stating size. But it’s a safe bet they’re in the larger size category.

For the sake of accuracy, I just realized that my enormous bag feels so big because it's a 75 liter plus a top pouch! I can fit EVERYTHING into it for back country missions. It's really too big.

My 65 is a tad big. 55 is a tad small .....60 would be perfection..but does mot exist for me as usual.

Right, a bloody pain trying to pull rope into a normal backpack bag flopping over constantly. But the ones for serious trekking and mountaineering that have an aluminium frame seem to work OK and can be leaned upright against a tree for support. The two Kelties I have also have extra pouches in places for various pieces of gear, water bottle, munchies, etc.

I think for a Rec climber going out in the boonies, a backpacking pack would be great….. I don’t do that (yet?). I’ve got an old buckingham bag, it’s burley as hell, and does everything I need it to. Them new arbsession packs do have my attention tho, IF that buckingham ever gives up the ghost.

I'm surprised by the lack of attention on basic bigwall haul bags. They are built super tough, have adequate and sometimes removable shoulder strap/waistbelts and stand upright on their own. They are surpringly cheap too.

I haven't bought a new bag yet. I didn't weigh my gear today but, it was heavy. I carried it probably 2 miles. I'll weigh it the next day or two and estimate the volume. I only found one interesting tree and it was getting late. I had my rope bag and helmet strapped to the top of my day pack. It was flopping around. I stripped my harness of extras. At this point I'm thinking I need a shorter/different rope to save weight. My rope is 150ft Samson 11.7. I did carry 1 extra biner, prusik, knee and foot ascender. I always take my hand saw and knife anytime I climb. Thanks for the suggestions.

Metolius.... I have a few. Tried them all. Some too big and lack of compartments is a deal breaker. Another for me is no dedicated handsaw compartment for my beloved pro-sentei and sawpod.

I have the Notch Pro Access and love it. Pockets galore and it opens up like a book so you can see everything and get to it easily. I can haul everything I need and backups. 150 ft of 11.7mm rope, nicely equipped saddle, helmet, rope wrench setup and my Rope Runner Pro, few biners and quickies, Silky with pod, throw line cube and still have a bit of room. Only drawback is no waist belt to take weight off the shoulders for longer treks to the trees. It is a bit spendy but the pop up on eBay or here in teeny once in a while.
