Lets see some shit... Shitty tree work picks from other companies in your area.

I’m sure they are leaving it, that’s done to trees around here every day. I have two in my back yard that were “topped off” because “they were getting too tall” and now that I own the house I’m stuck with the aftermath.
I had two of those in the first house I owned. I knew it wasn't a long-term home, so I enjoyed the shade and tolerated the trees. If we were there for a long time I'd have replaced them.

The top has since been blown out of what was once a completely healthy Metasequoia. It’s just a big ole coat rack now. I sat and watched the guy take 30min to remove two small branches. For a bit I thought it was someone just chipping away at a removal themselves to save cash but I now think they are legitimately trying to make a perfectly fine tree smaller, and unknowingly kill if. The whole small yard was full of brush B4F19822-23CD-49B2-9F87-2D15CAEF7946.jpeg

The kind of hackery shown in some of these photos basically never happens around here, I wonder why that is? I can't recall ever seeing stuff this bad but it seems like it's happening most other people's areas. Anyone else live somewhere free of this nonsense?

Practically nobody gets their trees fully pruned around here (~95% removals/take a limb or two off for clearance), so these pictures are very rare.

However, two hours north there's a town where there are dozens of topped trees. We say it must be a French thing because the town is the unofficial dividing line between the predominantly English and predominantly French parts of the province.

Immediately after posting the above pics, I closed the computer and ran up to pick up our son at school...the town where their school is hires somebody to this every few years. Fresh cuts today so I had him snap some pics as we were leaving:

Notice in the first pic you can see a private tree that got topped a year or two ago. I don't know who does this...my guess is it is some local. The population in the actual incorporated village is less than 500 people - most of the school comes from surrounding area. We don't live there so I don't know the who's who unless we've come across them at school or sports...

Are there regulations/restrictions?

Do tree service companies have to have any kind of specific to tree care registration or state/local licensing?

Some places there are enough educated consumers that the hacks cannot find work.

I think it happens in small towns more too because people hire based on relationship instead of qualification. Sometimes that works out great. Other times you get this. It is also for somebody without a clue to start a business. Its also easier for the hack to pass his hackery business onto the next generation and people know the name so they keep hiring.

I'll try to snap pics of trees at one of the local guy's houses. It has been a few years, but he tops his own trees, so apparently doesn't realize how bad it is (or maybe he thinks it good advertising?). Maybe if we're lucky he'll do it again this winter...they are "due" :tonto:

Yes, there are local city license requirements but people do skirt that pretty often. I've never known of anyone to get in trouble for it.

I think this might be the case here but I'm not sure if anyone around here would do this kind of extreme topping and lion tailing like some of these photos show. There's definitely a lot of educated people here in general and the general population has a lot of master gardeners and amateur botanists/tree scientists lol. It can actually be kind of a problem of its own.

Maybe this has something to do with it. We haven't even had trees for very long so maybe it's all modern tree folks, relatively speaking.
