What’s Your SMALLER Equipment Setup?

That seems a problem that you could fix without to much of a problem.

True, I thought of narrowing down the feed chute, installing a caster wheel on the front and one of these closer to the rear of the machine. In the end I decided the splitfire wasn't going to work for what I wanted to do.

The euros really do have a different mentality when it comes to compact equipment. Unfortunately it is insanely expensive to import at the moment. I would love a self propelled little beast like the Jo Beau or Eliet.

Also in terms of rakings I noticed all the gardeners were leaving their yard waste in bags at the client's curb for yard waste pickup so I started to do the same for my rakings. Saw dust and final rakings can go into the chips. Not a single complaint.

My 2002 BC1400 is being repaired at Vermeer. While waiting for parts to be built (new control board), I am hauling branches to the limb recycling center.
2004 f-450 with a Stellar hooklift. Load braches into the "chip-box" on the ground. Pick it up then drive to the dump.
If you are looking for a backyard chipper, we have a local company using two. Check out Parker Tree Service on YouTube. About 2 years ago in the videos. Not sure the brand, but looks like a glorified snow blower

I’d probably cry if I had to ride a bike home after a busy day of tree work.
Honestly the biking wasn't bad. Riding a bike is pretty fun. There were more than a few jobs though that the chipping overwhelmed me. And if the knives got dull that thing was brutal on the body and also very loud.

We have been using that Splitfire 4090 chipper too. Great for tight spots... but sure is loud!

Mike did you buy that Stellar Hooklift new? I love mine on a Ram 5500, and could move it to a bigger truck some day if I wanted to. 16K dump capacity.

No I bought it used from a local dealer who put it onto this truck around 2012. Before the hooklift, I towed a Nedlands rolloff trailer. I love being able to load logs at ground level. Hang a large set of log tongs from the hooklift to forward and load heavy pieces

Liking the info here!

I went the opposite direction than most. When I first started out I bought 2 dump trucks, 12" chipper, big spray rig, log trailer, etc. Been downsizing and tweaking to find the best (for me) small scale preservation set up ever since. Easier for an owner/operator to do than those keeping multiple crews busy.

With what I have now and where/how I started I think my most ideal setup would be:
a 12-14' low flatbed truck, one with a 185cfm compressor bolted to the bed (not uncommon at the auction houses). With enough room a the mini skid beside it. Lots of tool boxes, and then a modified dump insert type dump. Keeping the chipper. It would be a perfect rig and setup, where the mini could pick the compressor, and the dump insert if needed, I could have all I need on one truck. Leave behind what I don't need.
These days with my 12x8 dump, I tend to only dump once a week on average. It's too common and easy to keep the chips on site of the job.. I only haul wood a few times per year, most removals I just buck the wood near an easily accessible spot an it goes away.

My next truck will be set up similar. I can take my dump insert and mount it on the back. Tuck a couple 8 foot tool boxes on either side of it. Plenty of room for a few mats and mini skid in front of the chip box. Boom all in one unit ready to prune or do removals as long as they aren’t massive.

When I was at the first and only auction purchasing my start up truck, I noticed 3-4 flatbeds that had a mounted 185cfm. Can’t get that out of my head, so I’d roll with that and rig some way to swap out the dump insert and compressor as needed. Kinda like a switch and go.

Hook n go with two different flatbeds would be the easiest way to go. One with the air compressor one with the chip unit. I don’t really do any air spade work though so I’d probably just roll with it the way I described.

While I do a bit of airspade work, I don’t do enough to warrant buying a compressor, unless it comes with the truck.
