Saddle Insurance...sort of...

Hello All,

You know what would be a bummer. It's some yoyo walking by my stuff and stealing it. With one move, lifting my saddle, someone could make quite the heist.

I own an iPhone. I recently picked up Apple AirTags as I am spacey as all get out, and I am always looking for my keys, wallet, backpack, etc. I had one left over and thought I would like to have a chance to recover my saddle (and gear) if any SOB ever decided to clip it. So, I found a spot on my Sequoia harness to lash and stash it. I imagine that most saddles have a place to hide a tag.

One cool thing about the AirTags is that they use other iPhones on the network to triangulate location. I think there's a pretty good chance that if you said, "Find My" on your phone, you'd be taken to the dirtbag who has your stuff. Seems like inexpensive insurance; That is, I'll spend $25 to save $1,200.

I just got some air tags, and plan on stashing them on my equipment, issue is if someone steals my equipment its going to be a 50/50 if there is enough cell service, also a 50/50 if they have a iphone to ping my shit.

They can't ping your stuff...only you can. You make that move when you're standing with them, as the gps tracker brought you to their location. When they say they don't have it, you start pinging. What's that tone I hear in your trunk? Call police.

Maybe I used the wrong terminology. The air tag needs to be in proximity to any Apple device to receive a singal. That is what I’m trying to speak to.. So the thief and or gear needs to be in proximity to a apple device in order to pick up the singal for it to be registered under your ‘find my device’

but also another note is the air tag do or are suppose to send an audible alarm once out of your possession after a set time (can’t recall off had).. this is to alert whoever is in possession of the air pod. Essentially this is a fail safe for someone slipping a AirPod on your possession to track YOU.

Well, I’ve never tallied it all up, but I think it’s more than one wants to admit. Petzl Saddle, Double Ended Lanyard, Akimbo, multiSLING, Quickie, Hitch Climber Pulley, Petzl Knee Ascender (DIY), Notch Foot Ascender, Throw Bag and Line, CT Rigging Plate, Transporter Tool Carriers, ART Positioner, Eye to Eye Prusiks (2). Carabiners.

yep. I think it’s close.

Evo. The solution isn’t perfect, but it beats no solution. Hopefully I’ll recognize it’s gone within the necessary time frame, and someone…not just the thief…has an iPhone, iPad, Laptop, etc.

Yeah, pretty similar to what all lives in my pack… might have to get one and bury it deep in the confines of my gear bag. Not saying it’s impossible, but tree climbers are few and far between in my area, and this is specialty shit.

totally agree I bought a 4 pack for myself

I pay about $500/year for Inland Marine coverage on all of my equipment. It covers saws, climbing, rigging, heavy equipment, and most other things. If it's lost, stolen, damaged in an accident, catches on fire, floods, etc. I'll get a check. The peace of mind is totally worth $500 to me.

Crazy how that stuff adds up I tallied up just the climbing gear I usually have with me one day and it was over $3000 I thought maybe close to $2000, hadn't heard of those air tags before but might have to try it now thanks

AlanKekoa,

I agree. It is crazy. Start putting replacement costs on everything and it’s quite surprising. Different than buying a piece of gear here and there.

I have a feeling this is true for home/renters insurance as well. Living in Northern California, lots of homes have been destroyed. People find out the replacement cost, and realize they’ve been underinsured.

I have to tell you, it’s not perfect, but for $25 you can get an AirTag. It gives us a fighting chance for recovery. Knowing I have it tucked into my saddle gives me some piece of mind.

I’m not thinking some tree climber is going to steal it. Rather, it will simply be a crime of opportunity. Some dirt bag breaks into my truck to steal anything, and hits the jackpot. In 23 years, this has happened twice in my driveway. They stole sunglasses, binoculars, etc. (The stuff that lives in the truck). All is a drag, but the saddle would sting a great deal. And with a $500 deductible, it going to hurt a bit more.

I say go for it. Wait until one of us can tell the recovery story. Just need to hide it so that thief doesn’t know it’s there. Good luck.
