I made my own portawrap. It ain't pretty, but I'm a decent weldor, and I'm confident that it's about 10,000 to 100,000 times stronger in every measure than it needs to be.

Even A36 mild steel has a tensile yield strength of 36ksi...

After a couple requests and my laptop is cooperating here are a few pics of my project. In my area, like other areas any guy with a chainsaw and pickup are knocking trees down, like me, but the stump has been left as an eyesore. Rental grinders are usually dull and slow. Stump grinding...

Currently working on this. I’ve been collecting part and pieces for a few years now and it’s time to assemble. It’s got 4.5” drum good for upto 1” lines. I wanted something fully compatible to my CMI 146 with lift and lower capabilities. It helps having a commercial fab shop in the back yard.

I still have plenty of work to do on it. But it’s def coming along.

@Finky198; Wow, that was one hell of a first post! Really ambitious and amazing work you are attempting there. Thanks for going to all of the trouble to take and post those photos!

They make some really cheap action cameras that can be attached to your climbing helmet. Just type in a search on Amazon. Your close-quarters rigging exploits would generate a lot of interest here and on YouTube, if you ever chose to try to document and share the work that you do. I just wanted to plant the thought in your mind, if it was not already there.

No problem. Thanks for the kind words... I'm a long time lurker on here and Arborist site and also fairly active on garagejournal.. not as active as I would like to be, but I am attempting to change that. As far a photos go I have tons and over time will absolutely share what I can. I have thought about video but i just don't have enough time in the day.... I was professional photographer long before the tree work started... Pictures are quick and easy little to no editing... maybe in the future. Time will tell.

So I got some more welding and grinding and assembly done... I complete two more passes on the pipe to plate joints and weld the box tubing in place. The front pipe weld ground smooth. Then Deburred and rounded off all the corners and edges of the plate, the ratchet body and pipe. I made adtnl clearance for the top Crosby eye shackle. By grinding a bevel in the plate. After that it was time to call it a night. These 90* days aren't helping.

I took some measurements and weight as well...
plate is 12" x 12" 5/8" thick
pipe is 4.5"OD 1/4" wall
box tubing is 2.5" 1/4" wall
Fairleads are 7/8" and 1" made from Hardened Bolts.
Crosby eyes sz#7 on 1" thread rod (wll) 10000lbs.
Strap is a standard 4" made in USA

Place is currently a functioning mess... due to on going construction...

The weight without the ratchet strap bracket was 48.8 I think with everythings said and done I will be sub 60lbs. Which is about the same as the stein 3001 device.

Actually,
i can't remember any such policy or even practice at da'House;
In fact seems Butch's (virtually) 1 man show by comparison;
has persisted to stand for open link policy etc. even after being exiled here and there himself;
and virtually blacklisted by sponsors etc. from snotty end of politics that even creep into these places threatening demise if don't go along.

Even as some dust settles, he's held his own, alone; even as the (much) smaller of the 3. Not a threat, but was never a focus of his to squash anyone else anyway.
 
Just about done we will be doing some testing over the next week or two... I threw my 5/8 stable braid line on it for size and got 7 wraps I can prob fit 8 great news for bigger lines!!! Still A few things like primer / paint, I am thinking 2 holes near the top corners with Shackles will give me extra off-center tie in points, I might also need to make Top Fair lead, but I am not sure if it's necessary. Maybe some X rings?

I didn't get it weighed today, but its pushing 60+ pound. Granted I was able to mount and dismount it myself with no real issue... Rigging gear on top is 1/2" 10' Amsteel Eye sling /Omega Pac steel D, on bottom is 5/8" 15' Amsteel Eye sling. When it's all said and done I will most likely make a larger custom set of slings for this and its companion CMI Block.

A ratchet strap is an easy way to hang and adjust a POW or a fixed bollard. No rigging load, if you want to use something less expensive/ use the amsteel elsewhere.
 
I hope not. I’d much rather be overly secure then have a failure... hence bigger sling in the future.. I do a lot of large static picks, I’ve noticed over the years it’s becoming more common as the trees in our area especially the oaks are just BIG in general. Of course with big leads come big trunk wood and heavy negative rigging.

The Pow is nice for smaller trees or for control and tag lines, but I don’t feel comfortable maxing out the WLL all of the time... esp when your hanging next to 1000s of pounds

With the new device I can now focus the job. Peace of mind is everything in this biz...

I will def take that into consideration... we always have extra straps on jobs...
