somewhat sketchy tree

Why one 6200 pound pick instead of two? Were they laced together?
I'm going to guess, taking one at a time would unbalance an already fucked up tree, possibly resulting in part of the blown apart trunk to shift, even with the ratchet straps on it, in an undesirable way. Or, if you have room to put it down and its within the chart, why not?

Yup one pic as to not unbalance the split trunk. We were good for 11600 so figured we were good for it.

As always I asked Robbie my climber, what's the worst that could happen by relieving all the top weight. I guess logic doesn't play into it when you are right there making the cut

He really stepped up for this one. I told him I was climbing and he said fuck that I would rather climb than run the crane.

Robbie in clutch.....great job you 2.

Paul I'm genuinely interested in why you guys chose not to put a strap above the climbers top cut to help hold things together a bit? As crane work is outside my wheel house, I love to hear about the thought process from experts like yourself

That's a good healthy set of balls to do either job there. Nice work.

That's a might big pick. From your wording, I thought it might have been much more than about 60% capacity. A guessing game, I mean estimating game, for sure.

Storm damaged trees get my attention. I work in a bubble. Always interested to learn what people are doing.

Thanks.

Rico we chained both sides of the top and applied equal tension so in my mind they could just be 2 seperate picks as long as you can make the cut without getting the saw stuck. I guess a strap would have stopped the butt of the top opening up so much but that didn't concern me

It's hard to beat having a crane in some situations. Was it lightening struck or did it just have a failure? We had a poplar do something similar recently except the top came on down and landed in a house. You could see the burn marks from the lightening strike.

What model Grove is that? How do you like having an All Terrain crane? Most people, myself included seem to use a carrier mounted crane for tree work. Are you driving it around town or hauling it on a lowboy? I looked at a crane job yesterday and another one last week that I can't get my crane into but I could probably get an AT crane in.

Sweet job. What's that big yellow thing on the climber's saddle? Res on my phone not too good. Glad it came down safe, thx for sharing.
