Im new to the business, but never climbed before. Any advice?

1. Game of Thrones has surpassed every TV show out there as far as best show on TV.

I don’t know if that is fair to say. I do agree it is a very good show and I personally am a fan. However I know of people that will never get into it simply because fantasy is not their thing. In your OPINION it is the best show but to say it IS the best show is not right. How could you even argue MASH vs GOT two completely different things, it would be silly. Different strokes for different folks.

True true. It's all subjective. But it's a badass show. If people can get past the fantasy part it really shows how humans are, human nature, politics, etc

You either are trying to not understand or you are trolling. 16 hours worth of work doesnt mean someone has to work 16 hours in one day. It means 2x8 hour days.

I quoted your 1st 2 post with details concerning the 2 trees cupcake.

You later adjusted, & rightfully so, but I haven’t trolled anything, just identified what you yourself typed.

As someone who has been in a similar position, I Strongly Advise you to Bow out on doing those 2 trees, & go to work for someone respected in Your area.

Hopefully you will learn what you have been told repeatedly.

Thats the other thing. I came in here looking at tree service from a business perspective. Many here look at from an arborist perspective. Many here are super passionate about trees and doing whats best for a tree.

But from a business point of view, we are here to serve customers. Serving them sometimes means that you are going to top out that tree and leave it ugly but you will explain to them the consequences of doing it and if they still are adamant about topping it off, you do it. Because from a business perspective you are there to serve their needs.

Some will argue that long term you are doing them a disservice. I don't agree with that as long as you communicate the consequences of their actions and have them sign off on it.
You are basically admitting you plan on doing what is best for business not what is best for the trees. You do know that you are talking about getting into the business of arboriculture right? Arborist practice arboriculture. Somehow you have completely removed that from your equation. You think it is all about business. My main principal is to do what is right for the tree not what is best for business because in the long run that is best for business. I have no problem telling a customer their tree doesn't need to be pruned, that creates customer loyalty. You are setting yourself up for trouble on many fronts. I feel like I am getting dumber here with each post on this thread.

Mash is still on TV 30 years after its last episode. We will see in 30 years with GOT. I am guessing not.

Subscribe to the TCI magazine because its free, You will learn a lot and there's a section detailing all accident and fatality reports- that is very important to pay attention to.
Read every thread and page in the AWAKENINGS section.

3. I agree with you. This is why I am going to take it slow. But one thing is to tell me to take it slow and another is to just downright want to discourage me from getting into this industry.

I mean, I might as well get some help if I already made up my mind you know? lol
For argument sakes, are you saying GOT has surpassed every TV show out there of all time? or just in the past few years? That's a very big statement, but I don't really care any way. So I don't think anyone is trying to discourage you from getting into the industry. What is being said is start at the beginning not at the end goal of running a company. Advise has been given in the form of questions, its up to you to use it or not. No body here will suffer but you. Learn from others mistakes and experience.

My opinion only after reading this whole thread.
The people on this forum who have comment live the tree life, for most of us the business/trade of arbor culture consumes us, constantly learning, discussing ideas etc.
People who have done this for many many years rightfully take offence from someone who turns up out the blue, hadn’t paid their dues, wants to pick the collective minds extracting information that they have worked so hard for.
Many here will help you out giving information that has taken them time, blood, sweat, tears, broken bones to learn, but I wouldn’t dare argue with them.

To think you can open a tree business without any knowledge of the tree game and succeed by implementing processes to streamline things and make bank is ludicrous.

What processes can you bring to a business where the entire process of making bank is cutting the tree??

I started my business with my brother 12 months ago.
We had saws, climbing gear, a 12k truck and chipper and a strong desire to make it work after falling out with our previous employer.
We now employ 14 full time staff, have 4 ewps and 2 18” truck and chipper setups as well as skid steers, excavator etc and a 4 acre depot and workshop

How did we do it, worked really fucken hard, employed really good guys and paid them significantly more than anyone else.
I still work the tools every day, climb the shit trees, do the shitty jobs raking etc, I’m no better than any of the guys who work for me.

Do we make BANK, not really, our workers are paid well, and constantly invest in new equipment, update equipment etc

Scheffa, how long have you been in the tree game?
Full time 5 years.
Spent a lot of time prior to doing it full time cutting firewood and milling logs with big saws for furniture.
The saw work side of things was easy for me as I had a pretty solid foundation prior to starting full time in trees working for someone.

It was the climbing and arb side, taking care of trees, planning pruning and removal processes as a climber, understanding different species etc that consumed me.

I’m no guru of an arborist and don’t pretend to be, I try to stay well aware of my knowledge and skill level and don’t sell myself as anything more.

I can however run a crew, saw and spur climb as well as anyone around my parts.
It’s our desire to be the safest most productive crew with the best guys we can afford that has contributed to our growth.

My company owes almost solely does line clearance work and our skill set resembles that, we have fantastic lines climbers, can they spirless prune your ornamental tree?? Possibly but not as well as others.

Although I’m on here everyday, I rarely post because my experiences in the tree game rarely fall in line with others as most of my work is clearing around the lines here aus where things seem to be very different

My opinion is in the tree game, to be truly good at it you need to live it.
Every night I lay in bed on my phone flicking through the forums reading, learning and developing ideas/skills to try in the tree
