This is the Akimbo

SO I looked it up. According to the instructions from rock. It just didn't seem like a legit set up to have them on the same biner.
Rock Exotica recommends separating the Akimbo and termination end of the rope. The Rock Exotica Hydra is one example of a suitable connection. Connect the Akimbo using an appropri- ate oval carabiner. Rock Exotica recommends a RockO WireEye carabine
Using one biner on your double rope setup is just silly!

every time you pass a limb etc you need to thread the eye back onto the biner with akimbo etc, no thanks so impractical it's just ridiculous

The Akimbo shines as an SRS tool, that is what it was designed for. The only time I will use it for MRS is coming out of the tree that had a canopy anchor, in which case it will not be necessary to remove the rope for passing limbs. In such a situation I will most often use a second carabiner but it will work if you want to clip into the same carabiner that the Akimbo is on.

I use it mrs quite a lot for leapfrogging my way up dense canopies. For me, I like a steel carabiner on my working end. That makes throwing my line much easier and the extra weight helps me bring it back down to me.
Same here. I learned on a closed Blake’s with a steel rope snap. Can’t do with out the weight. I’ve found the petzl ovals to be the heaviest steel oval out there.

Sorry for the "new guy" question and thanks for the nice bevy of responses. Sounds like a steel oval is in the offing... I haven't used that mrt TIP advancement technique yet.

Careful when you pull a steel biner back over a limb, not friendly to facial bones. Adding a 10 oz throwbag to an alloy biner is effective when you want extra weight flipping your rope or lanyard end.

Don't think so.. I came in as an srt climber...zk2 in January 2014.

Well damn there’s an argument for having strong DdRT skills even when SRT is your daily bread. When you’re advancing above an initial rope access set on a conifer or any tree with close set limbs multi-pitching DdRT sets is super efficient to scramble your way up until you find that awesome spot to set your SRT canopy anchor.

But you can do the same thing with SRS by choking the limb above and continuing on using your foot and knee ascender or just free climbing the tree.

I choke above, tossing an aluminum biner. It's good for 0-10 feet. I sometimes hook to advance, alternating two life supports to capture progress.
