Rear mount grapple trucks

So we have a single axle truck with the grapple being a center mount. My question is there any single axle rear mounts? I feel having the extra reach on the rear would be better than the dumping. But I’ve necer seen a rear mount single drive axle. Using a single axle truck is so much easier to maneuver around a yard and doesn’t tear it up as bad. Possibly adding a lift axle for mor weight carrying capacity is an option too.

I don’t think I agree with that, I haven’t ran the numbers but my cab and chassis International 4700 has 7klb on the steer and 4880lb on the rear. The front is rated for 12klb and the rear 21klb. Adjusting the wheelbase for the loader at the rear shouldn’t be an issue.

Carl,
Its good to see youre still buzzin even if you dont do trees anymore. I defer to Carl on this one. Hes a smart fella and if he says it can be done safely it probably can.

Haha thanks... I actually am coming back into trees, or at least specifically removals. I wanted to keep my excavator for personal use, but it's worth too much and I use it to little for that to make sense. I got to thinking about a single axle dump truck to be able to move the excavator around at least. That got me thinking about what I would do with the excavator, tree work seemed like an obvious fit in terms of time vs reward, now I'm building a single axle hook truck with a tag axle!

Please share pics & details.

I’d imagine a lot of the single axle grapples start in the Muni field where production isn’t the goal. A single axle grapple truck is a mighty specific application given the diminutive payload.

For us a single Axel is easier for us as we have many free dumps and loaded travel time is very minimal. The lighter truck and shorter truck gets us in many place big trucks can't go and leaves less of an impact. Im just curious cause I've never really seen one and it seems like it might fit us better. Adding a drop Axel would improve the weight tremendously. We are looking at the rotobec 910 elite.

In the muni field cab is all that matters for sleep and break time! The rest of the trucks for show with a little debris in the back

So a tandem, but a tandem with one axle not being driven is better? I don't disagree, if you're in a specific application that doesn't go off road.

Another advantage to rear mounts is the ability to tow trailers (more easily) due to the frame going to the rear of the truck. My grapple truck was a twin screw plus a tag axle. Loaded, or loaded with a trailer, that tag axle was very helpful.

If I was going to build a grapple truck, it would be a twin screw with lockers at the least, probably with a tag axle again.

A short truck with a tag axle would be nice for the majority of our places.

Something like a 4700/4900 International with a 16’ body & a rear mount loader.

Cut in an opening for the chute on the chipper to blow in for the brush that will easily go thru the chipper & use the rear mount loader for larger stuff the Mini brings to it.

Platform behind the cab for The mini & toolboxes.

Pintle hitch for the chipper.

You just solved my issue.

Thank You Carl.

How do you get the chips out of the bed with a rear mount? Also most rear mounts pedestals would be in the way blowing the chips in from the rear.

I have unloaded lots of stump chips, dirt, etc with the grapple, but I don't think I'd build a truck to chip in with that being the method of removal.
