The Illusion of Safety: Safe vs. Safer vs. Safer-er

I one hand sometimes. If I was the poster child for STIHL I bet they’d have a thing or two to say to me. When I was a cover child on a STIHL catalogue everything had to be legit down to my safety glasses. It had to be perfect and not endorse anything against the standards.

Everyone pics apart everything. Look at any tcia or ISA mag they missed something safety related. Hundred of emails come in asking if they endorse those practices. It’s usually an oversight but sherrill isn’t an oversight of him. They choose to turn a blind eye for the possible profitability of the cool factor.

what sort of sponsorship does he have does anyone know? Im assuming its free gear. Not a paycheck. I haven't seen anything of Travors that makes me wince. Maybe I've missed something. Maybe too much one handing but he has good work positioning. I never saw the Facebook interactions where he was being called out. Either way, I have absolutely no problem flipping out of trees. I pretty much do that everyday and I encourage others to as well. If I had more skills with a camera I would post them. One of Travors' skills is with the camera. he is good at the media. That is why he is sponsored by Sherrill. 15k instagram followers will get you free gear from anyone you ask I'm pretty sure.

Not to to be a jerk but you’ve answered your own question then. So does singing tree endorse and encourage the flipping out of a tree or Kevin? What are the cycles to failure of your gear being shock loaded? Can singing tree show me how to do flips out of a tree on a video?

I should certainly hope all of the gear we use could handle shock loading. it certainly is designed and tested for it. Not sure about the tree or the tie in point. One nice thing about the rope runner is that it slips at a shock load meaning that you can use a less dynamic rope and you still get shock absorbtion in the device. Our carabiners and ropes all are rated to withstand a huge shock load. His little flips and swings are nothing compared to what the gear he is using is rated for. One video he flips with a saw on his belt which I definitely would not do. but he pulls it off fine. I was a gymnast as a kid, did a lot of rock climbing and a good stint at the flying trapeze. Tree work has allowed me to have fun at work. otherwise, if I had just wanted a good business I would have definitely not picked tree work.

Our ropes are not dynamic in relative terms. They are static to semi static. 10% elongation and less is considered static in the Rope world.

there are definitely pictures of Gerald Beranek doing some shit that I definitely would not recommend in this day and age. But he is worth idolizing and I have learned a lot from him. Like wise Phill Kelley. I am willing to bet that Gerald flipped out of a tree in his younger days. just didnt have a go pro.

It’s more than the flips Kevin. He is being idolized. Clearly. It’s great you guys are good with the flipping. I prefer to minimize my cycle to failure or the chance I may land it poorly and roll an ankle. My family depends on me minimizing risk and coming home able to go back to work tomorrow. We aren’t trapeze artists or gymnasts. I’m sure training on the trapeze includes a belay system. Surely not a static wire. Fall arrest has load deceleration engineered in it otherwise you get hurt or things break. It’s fine. I wish I could flip but I weigh the risk and choose to be conservative. I certainly wouldn’t encourage my fan base to do it. If I owned a company on my pr guy was doing stuff like that with my name attached or associated with it I’d have a bone to pick with him. And on the gear topic, why do we retire perfectly good gear at a certain interval? It’s probably still good and will probably still hold. I mean it’s rated for more so it should last 20 to 30 years rite?

I’m sure Gerald wouldn’t either!!

this is the way I usually flip. I try to stay tied in twice for the most part. travor does consistently use his lanyard. when cutting. he wears ppe. been improving over time. he shares his fuck ups as well. I dont know the guy.
