Training Video of Rope in a Chipper

I would imagine that the Ddrt would suck you up to your TIP and maybe break it out? SRT I think there may be less problems as long as your rope was broken by the chipper before your TIP ripped out.

Possibly, but in SRT doesn't your TIP takes double the force, so I would think it would break out before the DdRT TIP. One thing's for sure either way, YOU aren't going to have any fun.

No fun atall. Depends on your tie in method boomslang, canopy or basal anchor. And no you TIP never sees double load. Close maybe if your rope is 180° and its ran through a pulley or a very smooth barked union.

That is scary stuff. I remind my groundman daily to watch my climbing line and I always watch him drag away to make sure the limbs aren't catching my line. This is the reason I keep a my mom's old high powered school whistle with me in the tree. That sound cuts through ear muffs with no problem at all.

Bag the rope. So much time and energy wasted with fighting brush away from as climb line. Like taking the bullet out of the chamber.

For DdRT climbers, brush on the rope prevents assured emergency exit from the tree.

P.s. with my near death experience, I made its 100% clear that my SRT tail would be at the ground level, just. The chipper was 15' away. The
Basal anchor meant 150' of rope in the system to stretch. It just barely got to the chipper.

Before I went up that day, I spoke face to face with each guy, the groundie with 4 months experience, and the ground lead, 10 years of experience. "My rope tail will be on the ground, the chipper will be running. My rope needs to stay out of the chipper." Each guy repeated that back to me. " Guess what?

I have been hit by a chipped rope. A Samson arbor master, blue streak. 150 ft rope, tied in 60 ft in to the tree and back down to a Blake's hitch. The rebound from the rope had knocked me down in a flash. It's like a tidal wave, or a heavy dump truck slamming on its breaks. My hard hat went flying, I was thrown to the ground. The rope hit me from the side across my head and behind my shoulder. I looked up from the ground in shock. It took time to get back on my feet. Lucky nobody was in the tree at the time. I got a nasty rope burn from where it had hit my shoulder and burned me through my cotton shirt. I was a groundsman at the time, worn out chipping brush and not paying attention on a hot day with low blood sugar and working through break time. The chipper ate six feet of rope before it caught the slack and broke. This was a big wake up call for me. My foreman told me that he wouldn't tell the boss if i replaced the climbing line with a new one so i did. I took the rope home with me and started buying myself my own equipment and even learned to climb on the rope that knocked me on my ass.

Your lucky it didn't damage the chipper. This happened to me in 2009

Bent the steel on both sides of the disk...even the 1" plate right around the bearing.

Powerful video!

If you don't have time, that's one thing. I keep a pocket knife on me in case I did. Also knowing your equipment is paramount. A fast disconnect from the system could save your life. Another reason for being tied in two-tree times...

It would be interesting to see if it could snap a tree in half. Most climbing gear is rated upwards of 23Kn. I would imagine that's all it would take to crack 'er over.

Scary stuff. Keeping mine with me : )
