Re: YES, RIG\'EM&ROLL= one of the best things !

In this video on you-tube they drop a limb and I don't see any bounce to it.Granted the butt end was already touching the ground. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zraPhicJQQs I did a maple last month that was between 2 house and a LOT of horizontal picks that would have been much easier and faster with the Rig'em & Roll. Sue and I both talked with these guys at TCI(Sue got a free shirt) and liked the looks of the unit. The above video also shows how quick the Rig'em & Roll can be installed. I think it would also work fine with the aftermarket load cell we are planning to add.

Re: YES, RIG\'EM&ROLL= one of the best things !

Sue and I were discussing the Rig'em and Roll and I made a comment about it costing in the $10,000 range and she told me she thought they quoted her around $7,000.Has the price come down or is this like the shirt...the cute blonde gets the better deal?LOL

Re: YES, RIG\'EM&ROLL= one of the best things !

Sue was off on her price. The price I had was for the original prototype. The current ones are in the 12K range. Looks like they could save a lot of time on the horizontal picks.Mike how did you like it hanging on the cable?I was wondering if,on a knuckleboom,it would be more efficient right off the end of the boom(similar to a log loader).

Re: YES, RIG\'EM&ROLL= one of the best things !

Hey Kman, The cable gives space between the R&R and extension cyls. it also let's the piece move freely so you don't torque on the end of the boom or break the stem! It is very easy to position so when i get one i'll use the cable.

Re: YES, RIG\'EM&ROLL= one of the best things !

I realy liked the way it worked in conjunction with the knuckleboom & fly jib! But even if i didn't own a crane and only rented one once a week, i'd still buy a R&R!!!

Re: YES, RIG\'EM&ROLL= one of the best things !

RE@R looks real good for trees that you know are somewhat stable. I think it would be a little tricky doing something really dead for fear of knocking parts of the tree off. What do you think?

Re: YES, RIG\'EM&ROLL= one of the best things !

Good point Rdmott, unless the stems were horizontal & didn't have branches that would cause alot of side roll, i personally would w/ spider legs & slings. (i've got some photos coming up where i used spider legs and the Rig'em & Roll together!!!)

Re: YES, RIG\'EM&ROLL= one of the best things !

The post I did at first was of a couple of dead trees. You do have to keep in mind the different weight distribution of a dead limb. (Rig point is typically a littlecloser to the trunk due to smaller limbs losing their weight faster than the part with heartwood)

I guess really dead trees near really sensitive targets, like the one Mark Adams did over a cemetary (See building a ramp for a crane...)would be best done with slings, tying into the crane, etc.

For the most part, dead limbs that aren't badly decayed or obviously weakened, should be OK. The operator has to use his judgement, of course.

Re: YES, RIG\'EM&ROLL= one of the best things !

Is there a reason you set-up the truck so far away?

Re: YES, RIG\'EM&ROLL= one of the best things !

So, when you have just "picked" a limb out of the tree, can you rotate the limb with the RE&R? Kind of like a grapple would.

For example, you need to turn a limb around to orient it butt end towards the chipper.

Re: YES, RIG\'EM&ROLL= one of the best things !

No, you can't do that. The rotation is designed for positioning the machine around the limb, and it doesn't have nearly enough torque to turn the limb around. The reason is that the machine is designed for use at the end of a cable crane, where all that torque would just mess the cable up. For a knuckle boom it would be nice, but sorry, no 'grapple style" rotation

And if you have the reach why put the equipment under the tree.
