wrecked by Geckos

Ahoy hoy. As the thread title suggests, I just had a bad experience with a new-to-me pair of Gecko aluminum spurs, but given their immense popularity and how light they are I'm hoping the fault is mine and seasoned hands can explain why.

Backstory: Last year, as a new climber I bought some used steel buckinghams’ with tree gaffs and Cadillac pads -- which I love. Combined with a secondhand Puma harness, some Canada West shanked boots, and a few tea towels (thanks BBR), I have spent nine hours without rest up a tree with no discomfort. However, I work in two different countries, so left both harness and spurs down south anticipating getting a 'new' setup in Canada, which I have done. Bought a used lot that included a weaver harness that looks more or less identical to the Puma and some aluminum Geckos with Euro spikes that I was stoked to try. Well I tried them, and although they are nice and sticky on the tree they are KILLING my hip joints. Some stiffness/stretch on the inside muscles of my thighs is standard after a month off but this is other level discomfort after 2-3 hours, and all oriented around the hip socket and rotator/stabilizer muscles on the outside of the joint. Setup included cranking both sets of straps as hard as hell so they don’t move at all, which I thought was the point. Am I wrong? A friend also wondered if the Weaver harness might have something to do with it in terms of positioning of the D’s, but I don't have the Puma here to compare. The gear lot included a second Weaver harness that's idenitical but Small rather than Medium and as a skinny 34 waist I'm between them for size, so I'll try that out once the hurting stops. Plan C is buying more Cadillac pads for a set of steel Kliens that were part of the lot but I wanted to ask the masters before I shell out more coin. Any advice would be appreciated because I want to love these spurs!

Chuck the Euro trash gaffs in the garbage where they belong...Slap some caddy pads of any decent pair of Bucks or Bashlins and your GTG....

I tried the Gecko spurs for about 5 minutes one time and had to get off them. Hurt my shins something awful. I'm with Rico, Bashlins or Bucks except I'd go with the Big Buck pads. The Puma and Weaver saddle you have, (I'm assuming it is a Cougar) are almost identical saddles. the Puma was made by Buckingham and they size their saddles slightly different than Weaver which might be a part of the problem. I'd try the smaller saddle to see if that makes any difference. I've never been on Caddy pads but the Big Bucks are like sitting in a leather easy chair.

The Big Buck's are another solid recommendation..I recently spent some time in the Weaver ProCool pads and they were very very nice. I know, fuck Weaver...

I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Bashlin recently retooled their spurs a little and I dont believe that Caddy pads will fit them any longer...

Me not so much... If I turn sideways I almost completely disappear.. When I was a kid I knew lots of big thick dudes who loved the old mallory's, which are the original caddy pad. The Mallory's only formed a little over a 1/4 circle so they fit pretty much everyone and were comfy like a mofo. Too bad Opsal won't do the same.

You guys are making me nervous, just ordered dmm shank geckos with tree gaffs and KK ascender this morning, mainly because you can switch out gaffs and because I like design of KK ascender

5-6hrs in Geckos (pole spikes) and no soreness then or next day. I’d try changing parts of your setup before blaming the climbers. Different spikes, saddle adjustments, foot placement on the tree, posture...
X2

I wear geckos every day with no discomfort. I tried the euro spikes for about three climbs before tossing them.

Remove the padding and slide it up a half inch, so the thicker part of the pad is slightly over the edge of the cuff. As long as you’re not sporting the euro style spike, you should be fine. They may require a slight change in your technique, as they may otherwise gaff out a lot. I had to change my step a little when I switched from Buckingham, no problem these days. Except the dead ash bark ripping off yesterday and catching my knuckles between my lanyard and the tree when I slid down, grrrr.

Sorry to hear about your knuckles, I hate gloves and don’t wear them but loose some skin now and then when things don’t go right that’s the trade off. Thanks for the tip, I’ll be sure and make pad adjustment, makes sense

@Wrangler I wear (on the occasion I climb these days) a set of carbon fiber Geckos, and have never had a comfort problem. I have two friends who also wear them every day, one of whom actually wore out a pair from use. The only complaint I have is unique to the carbon fiber version - the bottom of the stirrup is too thick to fit well under my boot, so it wants to move around a bit. Changing the way I strap them up seems to fix that.

Geckos have many virtues but the profile of their gaffs is not one of them. Not sure who is designing their gaffs but they clearly dont know shit about climbing in spurs...

So you have a pair of steel Bucks with Caddy pads and you love them.. You tried some of the super awesome, super fly, and super light Gecko's and they whooped your ass. Recoup some loses by selling those overhyped pieces of shit and go with what you know works (Bucks & Caddy's). Problem solved.

Word of warning about the Kleins.. They suffer from the same fatal flaw that Geckos do... A shitting gaff profile that among other things puts your foot too far from the tree.

Was there a third maker too? Swear I’ve seen ALCOA caddies.

That’s good info, makes me feel better about not spending the extra money for the CFs, I don’t wear loggers either
