being honest, i used to climb sketchy like this when i first started out.

Well I think it's clear that the climber is not a pro. It appears to be his first time on spurs. Aside from that, what's the big deal?

He wouldn't get caught using his brother's gear if he would take the gaff covers off the spikes before climbing. He's out ten bucks now, and owes an apology. Otherwise he seems pretty safety minded and careful for an inexperienced climber.

but spiking a pine for no reason??? and sawing with only one means of attachment??

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the second attachment is only required when using a powered saw not a hand saw. Still a safe practice though.
