Worst Thing Through A Chipper?

Funny you say cell phone. I "lost" my cell phone one afternoon. Shut all the equipment down. Started calling my phone and walking around the jobsite. Would you believe the chipper is ringing. The phone went through the feed rollers, but didnt make it to the cutters. Actually found it sitting on the cutter bar when I opened up the feed rollers. I was amazed

Worst thing was one of my guys left a 24" crow bar in the chipper after adjusting the cutter bar. Fired the chipper up and heard a big bang. Crow bar went straight through the top of the shoot never to be found again.

Lucky enough it was at the shop a ways into the woods. Really wish i saw where/ how high it went. Very stupid mistake that should never happen, just as simple as cleaning out your workspace.

Here is my list:

1-My 1st business, my helper was chipping grape vine and pulled a metal rake thru my Bandit 90. Big chips out of the blade and a crack thru to the bolt holes. Lucky the blade didn't come off.

2- A contractor was hired by the NPS to demo some old barns and out buildings. They were chipping the wood from the buildings with a rental chipper. Blade went thru the disc housing, wish I had a picture of that one.

3- A big company I worked for, a back pack blower and a brand new 200t.

4- Another big company where I ran multiple crews. 1 day I stopped by to visit with the crew and I climbed into the chip box to get rid of some coffee. There was a rake that went thru the chipper. Another crew chipped a back pack blower, that one caught on fire.

Me and 2 other guys where doing a small lot clearing job. The 3 of us wrestled a large wild rose bush into the chipper. Half way through chipping, there was alot of noise, sparks out the chute and the chipper shut off. Then a 6 foot long mangled piece of rebar came out of the shoot. I don't know how long it was to start but I also can't imagine how it went through the whole chipper still 6' long. Messed up those blades big time. It was all rusted and looked like a branch, it was summer so the bush was in leaf and you couldn't see it, had to have been in the bush off the ground.

Another job we did, I started the take down of an oak in the bucket. Boss showed up and was gonna take over in the bucket. I filled the 200t on the back of the hopper so as to not spill gas/oil on the concrete driveway area(no grass really close to the truck). One of the other "brillant" people working that day covered the saw on the chipper hopper with brush and proceeded to start the chipper and the 200t went into the chipper with the jug of bar oil. Saw was trashed, chipper blades where trashed. I realized it when the chipper sounded funny, I lifted the feed roller and my heart sank.

Both times the chipper was a Bandit 250xp.

Yet another, boss hired a climber for several large take downs with a crane, climber brought his crew with him but wasn't supposed to. One of his guys chipper a D-ring shackle that was used with the slings with the crane, messed up the blades on the brand new chipper we were demo'ing.

I guess the only thing I actually chipped was the rebar with 2 other guys.

I accidently chipped a friends Backpack blower once.
I didnt know it was in there and when I started his machine the feed rollers were engaged.
Cmon, who keeps their back pack blower in the chipper?
My bad for not looking.
Could have easily been someone napping :)

I keep all power tools in the infeed. Who starts a chipper without looking in the infeed?

What if someone threw a baby kitten in there?

In Jesse's case bye bye baby kitty

Tried to push thru a jammed up piece of wood with a spade end pry bar, slipped, knife snapped the head clean off,
It was a cheap overseas metal bar so it just give my hand a bruise when it jumped.
Guarantee you if it was my high strength steel pry bar, i would off demod the chipper and my hand to.

Take heed, seriously. wood only!

Last part of the day, near dark, thought we were done. Ground guy started picking up tools and putting them on the feed table of my Vermeer 1800A. Took everything off except the brand new peavey...
That cost half a set of knives and a new (again!) peavey.
I still have the pieces I fished out of the truck in my barn as a reminder.

small blower, chaps, tarp...tarp caused the most headache of the three...just hearing these stories is painful, but that table is a most excellent storage spot!

The new vermeers will not allow the feed rolls to engage with the feed table up. we only stores cones because of all of the equipment that doesn't get locked and pinned in the boxes of the truck grows legs.
