Working SRT with Gri Gri

Both. If you need to limb walk, you just disconnect the attachment to the upper micro pulley.

Its basically a rope tools version of the shunt.

I've also done this way on a really long descent, about 180 feet, and it helped to keep the GG from heating up.

Using the GG for long descents is not advised. It works of course...but...a tool with more mass is a better choice. The GG doesn't dissipate heat fast enough and can get VERY hot unless the descent is slow.

The Grigri is "belay device". Not a descending device. Wrong application for a great tool. I would not recommend this tool for that application.

Au contraire mon frere!
Here is an official Petzl.com link showing the GG2 "Descending - Self lowering" page 19.
It is rated by Petzl as an "expert technique" and Zeb is certainly an expert.

Agreed, it is NOT good to 'BURN' down with a GG but Self Lowering works fine - so does "Working SRT with Gri Gri" as Zeb's video shows.

Good job Zeb!!!

That's one of the reasons I set it up with the carabiner above. Was able to control speed much more easily by adding some friction above.

Good point, however.

And as a means for working a single line, it is very smooth and allows for a quick change to a 3:1 return for a limbwalk.

My apologies. I was told years ago by a Petzl rep not to use it as a descending device. Obviously, Petzl has changed that application.
Good job Zeb. Nice and smooth descent.

Both GriGri models are only compatible with EN 892 rope. Both models have a max rope diameter of 11mm.

Samson/Arbormaster BRW is not certified to EN 892. It is also larger than 11mm diameter.

Now, one could argue that older GriGris (with printed, specific notices that included descending on EN 1891/NFPA 1983 rope) may still be used with low stretch rope as described in the notice. Perhaps?

Also, the hauling system in the vid is 2:1. Only two parts of line at the moving block. A 3:1 rigged to disadvantage.
