Working On A Slope

I had a fun job 2 Saturdays ago.

It was in Raymond, CO. It is a tiny town (if you could call it that) in the mountains. The house was at the bottom of a valley near a creak. Since I am used to working on flat ground this was a challenge.

To avoid logs and limbs rolling down to my customer's garage and home we had to pull out some tricks.

Some of you guys probably do this quit a bit, so bear with me. I don't get to zip line stuff often, so some of this was a learning curve for me.--Enjoy.

A couple of times when I was in to 5"-6" diameter branches I was concerned that these would bounce and roll to the garage, so I used slings...

We only had three trees to bring down, but the locations were making things go slow. So, the second tree I fell perpendicular to the natural lean (toward the detached garage)...

The tallest tree we measured was 80'.--Not bad for a Blue Spruce in the area I was in. The slope was another 20' in height.

Here is a photo of the 10' top that came out.

Go ahead...Look at my gear. Critique some things...
I know some of you will want to...

GRCS for pulling the wood into the grass. I liked the technique. My goundie (the one who had to do all the cranking) didn't.

Did you notice the brown tarp? My customer wanted us to try to collect as much saw dust on the tarp while cutting firewood lengths.--He didn't want his driveway full of saw dust.

Oh well, I didn't have to buck wood.

The photo is my goundie Bill showing his stuff.

It was getting late, so I had to put the Spruce down. I fell the tree slightly up-slope between trees. I had a very little gap to aim into. I am glad to say I didn't damage a single branch or the trunks of the 2 trees.

The guy sitting on the log is Ivan (pronounced E-bon in spanish). He is the best goundie ever! He is worth 2 men!

Notice I had to weave the re-direct between the trees. You can see the yellow block in the distance above Ivan's right shoulder.

That was it...

Here was a fun shot of a open faced notch witht the backgound of the mountains. The sunsetting was a little bright for the photo, but you get it.

I have one more photo of the skyline, but I didn't want to post it originally. I FUBARed my back cut.

But, I am not perfect, so here is a good photo of the view...

Notice how steep the slope is? They actually had a avalanche burry their detached garage back in December. And it stopped about 6' short of their home. So, the large logs pinned between the trees will help (hopefully) be a avalanche break. However, it is not good for the fires.
