Wooden Poles

Hey guys, I work out of Boulder, CO and I have been looking for wooden poles instead of the fiberglass ones and haven't had any success. Anyone know where I could order some or potentially pick them up in the area? Thanks!

Ace Hardware, Home Depot? wood poles ftw, i like that little bit of flex you get with a wood pole... open for interpretation.

Gonna have to mill your own to get basswood far as I know..the last ones I got my hands on were out of the now out of business Karl Kummerling from Ohio. Sucks .. Ash is kinda heavy , hemlock splinters a bit, poplar is flimsy. Luke told me he could get me a dozen 12 foot poplar for like 18$ a piece I think that's what he said anyways don't quite me on that, but what the hell I gonna do with a dozen. I'm still useing a twelve and a sixteen foot basswood from 5 years ago. I've been utilizing basswood poles for nearly 15 years in trees ..Awesome for line setting /retrieving..Deadwooding..especially before SRT when I was on a tline early on as a climber and I plan on useing them when I'm really old up there as well.. wood handle with a nice sharp double thick long treestuff.com blade and a good Marvin head... one of the most under appreciated and under utilized tools in tree care in my lowly opinion. I spoke to Don Blair a while back about getting some basswood .. He said only hemlock or ash. I'm sure ash is gonna be easy to come by more than ever now a days .. In a twelve that's not to bad , but finessing a monkey fist stretched out with a sixteen .. Nah no thanks ..That's what the mag throw bag is for haha.. Good luck with the search for basswood .I would love to have someone produce them .. I'm looking to produce my own soon if thats what I gotta do . Cheers!!

Lemme pull a CL move on ya..high risk basswood removal 24" dbh 75' tall 70% decay...you cut it down and you can have the wood for free!

I've used hemlock, ash, and basswood back in the day; basswood poles are the best! Though it's always good to look at them, like picking good lumber. For long poles, fiberglass or aluminum really aren't as good, but honestly it wasn't worth the effort of
a: finding and shipping long-ass poles
b: carrying around long-ass poles
if you really don't need them that often.

That said, I did see this:

I called macro . They haven't had basswood in three years : (
The supplier was out of Maine I was told .
Doesn't know if they'll ever get them again
Plenty of ash though 26$ for 12' and 44$ for 16'

"Plenty of ash though 26$ for 12' and 44$ for 16'"
So the price jumps from $2/ft to $4/ft? Hmmm there might be money in pollarding linden, and harvesting when sprouts are that size.

"high risk basswood removal 24" dbh 75' tall 70% decay" WTF???

70% decay = 30% solid springy basswood; are you jivin my sox off man? I've seen em stand on closer to 3%.
high risk indeed; the assessor's high on assumptions and generalizations, a wicked brew.
Or just spreading compost to grab the poles. :buitre:

Anyway telescoping is an indispensable feature for me, so until the pole can grow on demand, I like fiberglass and metal.. Though if I had a good woodie again I'd surely find the right tree to use it in!
