So, say someone has limited skills, not fast at all, and never done aerial rescue [me] and wants to compete? (mostly just to try it) is that a good idea or should I maybe just volunteer or something untill faster/ smoother?

I always thought it would be cool if they would let non-competitors try out the events after the real competitors have done their thing. Either that or have a heavy weight division that I could climb in.

I volunteered a coupe of years back and it was pretty fun. I would suggest it for anyone. It really gives you a different perspective on things.

Well i will give it to you this way. I watched one for a year to see what it was all about before I competed. Having said that all the greats had to do their first climbing comp and their first aerial rescue. I did my first competition 2 years ago and had a blast.

It's all what you feel comfortable doing. Whatever you decide feel free to introduce yourself. I like putting names to faces.

I am going to try to make it but if I volunteered to help my wife would kick me to the curb. Thanks for the input on the playgrounds. Maybe I will bring my two oldest boys and make a day out of it.

Come to watch, not volunteer. Go from event to event to get the feel for each. Ask questions to the competitors. Take some vid or pics. Practice AR with someone who's done it.
Contact the WAA and ask if they can put on an AR presentation.
The Illinois Arborist Association has AR presentations if WI doesn't.

Get a set of rules, and READ them.
So when you go to watch, you will:
A) Understand the event
B) Understand some of how to get the most points w/ a limited amount of time.

So I have never competed, didn't have time to practice for MNs comp. So what does one do to enter this comp. As a visitor?
