Winter Weight Saw Pants

Steve Connally

Been here much more than a while
All the hype about the summer pants and the heat but what about when it's cold? Is there a good winter weight besides the stihl pant or do you guys just double up on thermals to keep your arse warm? I was even thinking just wear chaps under my saddle but that seems like a major PITA.

After coming back south (NC) after working in MN for two years, I can't imagine using winter weight pants. When I was in MN, I just wore merino wool long johns under whatever pants I wore. I'm just now getting comfortable, temperature wise, wearing non protective SIP pants. Just my opinion.

Kinda what I was thinking. In the past on blistery cold days I'd wear arborwear with thermals under. I guess that'll work with the saw pants also. Just thinking about when I work on the water and the wind tears rite through everything. Figured the backs of my legs would get pretty cold but MN is much worse than VA so i'll take your advice.

Steve the best investment I ever made for cold weather was a set of Minus 33 Chocura midweight crew top and the corresponding midweight bottoms. They're thin enough to wear under your normal clothes without upsizing. They're incredibly soft and don't itch. You can wear them for recreational activities (fishing hunting hiking ball games etc) and not have dedicated cold weather work clothes.

You'll piss on your under armor or other synthetic cold weather clothes, then pour kerosene on them and throw a match to them.

Looking at a little over $100 for a top and bottom, but i wore them daily for two winters, going into third but haven't needed them here. Washed once a week. True 90%+ virgin wool holds no noticeable smell.

Steve, I've worn the francital pants that ts sells for the past 2 or 3 winters with wool long underwear, sometimes 2 pairs on a frigid day. They did just fine. What are winters like in your area? We get lots of wind but lots of sunshine too.

I'm a Patagonia fan and have a ton of it but I'll check out chocura thanks. Levi. Our winters are wet cold not in the way yours are. I was perfectly warm on horseback hunting in Wyoming in minus digits and wind with just a silk bandanna to protect my face and neck (aka wild rag). Thin thermals jeans and a decent down coat. Virginia is a wet cold. In the 30 range I'm cold to the bone. Rarely below zero here. Think the coldest I've climbed in is 14f but again it's a wet feeling cold that you can't shake. I tend to have multiple layers on on a day like that and am still freezing when I'm not moving. Guess it's the moist air coming in from over the bay and ocean.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the humid cold, whole different animal. I've got the Patagonia thermals too, very nice.

Steve Minus 33 is just the brand I use and mentioned. It's what was available close to me. There are certainly lots of great brands. I just mentioned them as it's what I have and as an example of the style of what I'd recommend
