Willow limb above a "bathroom"

Willow limb above a \"bathroom\"

I was hired by the Army Corps to remove this limb hanging over a permanent portapotty, used a fiddleblock over a portawrap to keep it from lowering any. There was only about 6" that the limb could drop on the last cut.

Great picture...I lightened it up so I could see more detail.

The Portawrap looks to be anchored to a "don't bump this" post.

How did you secure the Pwrap to the post...it looks like smooth paint to me? And how did you know how secure that post was? That is a big piece of wood.

Looks like a job very well done.

Re: Willow limb above a \"bathroom\"

The post was about like a telephone or electric pole. I have a sling made from an old bull rope and it grips very well. The rope went up through 2 pulleys and there was very little strain on anything as I took up the slack with a fiddle block and when I cut the piece just kind of floated away.
Tom, don't hold back on the puns, that's one of the reasons for the post.

Re: Willow limb above a \"bathroom\"

What is a fiddle block, how is it used, what makes it different from a regular block? Any takers? Keep in mind I love pictures. Nice job by the way

I have only read about them....in the Sherrill catalog...they appear to be a method of safely lifting heavy loads. If you don't have their catalog, you probably need one...lots of good info on how to use what they sell...not just things and prices.

when you get to the page below, type "fiddle" into their search window

or look here:

Re: Willow limb above a \"bathroom\"

Phil, go to www.wtsherrill.com, open to the catalog, click on "climbing", then click on "pulleys". A fiddle block is the 1st pulley shown.
It's a double pulley that keeps the lines parallel instead of in tandem. Some have a "cleat" for locking the rope off. Used mostly in the sailing industry.

Re: Willow limb above a \"bathroom\"

Great Job; aluminum (roof)is not very forgiving! i always figure the final direction/option to drop something is up; or just equate it's force and float, then tag out as median.

Puns, i've never been good at'em; but isn't Permanent Porta Potty kinda oxymoronic as Holy War?

Fiddle Block has 1 sheave smaller, so that you can get a multiple sheave pull on an end, without sheaves being side by side or rubbing ropes. The total inline-ness from not being side by side; gives more 'pure' application of power/multiplier (and steadiness too i would think); than if lines on more bent path to accomodate side by side sheaves. Less friction from not crossing/pure rope path 'spiral' too i think.

Though, the smaller sheave set would arc/leverage line more. Also be less efficient; calculating efficiency on axle friction X sheave to axle ratio.

i like Sherrill, but trying to link to show their products hasn't ever worked; i don't know if that is purpose-full. i suggest Google Catalogs; but the catalog there still hasn't been updated since 2003. But, i thinx we are talking about Item J&K

I can't decide if their site is designed that way as a result of ineptitude or on-purpose as a means of protecting their "intellectual property". It's been a while since I've been to the site because it's so crappy to use, but they were misusing javascript to be the sole method of forming requests which are almost entirely made using HTTP "POST" instead of "GET". As opposed to the "usual" convention, you can use "GET" from within an HTML FORM element, but I don't believe you can use "POST" outside of one. A "normal" link is an HTML A (anchor) element (the ones auto-generated by this forum software). To provide a direct link to one of their products, one would have to be able to construct an HTML FORM and include it in a page or forum post; something which is currently disallowed here.

That was supposed to be informative on a relatively simple scale...

It would have been a "crappy" job if things went in the "toilet"...so to speak...

Yeah especially those toilets.
Now that's what I'm talking about.

Re: Willow limb above a \"bathroom\"

Huh. We normally just use our fiddle block for roping off trees to be cut. Learnsomething new every day.
