Widow makin' Lombardy

Widow makin\' Lombardy

Got called to this job at a local Motel after some freaky winter weather. The tree is a lombardy poplar and, as is hopefully evident from my shaky photo, it has partially split out due to internal decay. The poplar has four leaders, and one of them is resting on a neighbouring cypress. There is a storage shed within the drop-zone. I can scale up the cypress and swing over to the poplar to sectional fell it no worries, but the issue I have is that once the leader that is resting on the cypress is released, the remainder of the tree will go. The site is very restricted, so no vehicles can get in, and there aren't really any tie-off points directly behind the poplar. Any ideas?

Re: Widow makin\' Lombardy

is it feasible to tie off the top of the stem to the cypress prior to cutting out the hung up top, then lowering the stem down? perhaps lowering it down from the cypress and using a tag line to pull it away from the storage shed as it comes down?

Re: Widow makin\' Lombardy

Sorry that it's taken so long for me to post how the job went in the end - not much of a net user when the weather is fine! Thanks for the suggestions, especially Gord's, as we managed to get the tree down using your idea, slightly modified, with no damage to the shed - or me! Despite the tree's butt having a crack bigger than a plumber's, it was stable enough once the three leaders were reduced down that when the fourth leader was cut (the leader leaning on the cypress)and released, the remainder didn't fall haphazardly, and we lowered it down sweet as!
