why so many

With all our trainings and all the available information on safety why are there so many sad stories here lately? Is it just me or are we having a rush on accidents?

Two reasons, likely:

1. We are doing a better job of capturing the data.

2. The economy has more people out attempting to do our job.

Perfect answer.

With cheapest price being so important to many, I think more people are going with companies that turn a blind eye to safety. These are the guys that can bid cheap. Plus they are probably working faster to get the job done within the budget.

Now compound those two attributes of speed and bad bids and you got yourself an accident in the making.

When I find I'm on the verge of overshooting a bid, I must remind myself not to rush or speed things up. If the salesman doesn't give the best guess as to amount of time needed on the bid, its not my fault.... although that is money that comes out of the profit sharing account. :-(

I hope your dad isn't the salesman James!

I always liked reviewing the job with the salesperson to let them know how close to the estimate the job actually was and why it took less time or more time as the case may be. Along with this, we also had a daily log breaking out travel time, shop time, and time on the job. All this helps the salesperson understand the crew's performance and estimate based on this instead of their own past experience alone.

They are as much a part of the crew as the groundies.

I agree with hurry and fatigue. I wish there were some way to get thru to the do-it-yourselfers and the cheap folks that you get exactly what you pay for. One company that I climb for in San Antonio replaced me with 22 year old and a ladder. He's dead now and his wife and 2 kids are very much alone. Stupid waste for a few bucks.

It's up to us when we put on the salesperson's cap, or estimator's, to take the time to tactfully explain the benefit to the client of our service over that of the cheaper bid. Yes there is a difference but how in the world do you expect the layperson to know???

I had a the neighbor of a customer tell them he saw me "out there trying to kill myself the other day." I was hanging a pine down in a garden.

While I was working this neighbor, I'm guessing he's 60ish and retired, whipped out his ladder and his Wild Thing was over there buzzing on something.

It just occurred to me that he was going on about me being dangerous when HE was the statistic waiting to happen.
Take a look at these awakenings threads and see if 'old guy, working alone with no professional experience' isn't a theme.

I'm not judging old guys with saws cuz i AM one, but it's a trend worth noting and perhaps doing something about.
