Why should I go SRT (rope wrench)

I wonder if you would benefit from putting powerscenders on your spikes?

With a top rope you can spike up the tree without a flip line.

With a mechanical multiscender you can do that without the spike ascender. That being said the powerscender is well worth the $, use mine all the time.

A mechanical multiscender is good but in my case the powersender was a massive improvement in speed and ease of spurring.

It was, for me, the greatest innovation of last year.

An APTA makes very high, non-isolated shots pretty easy. When you can rope-walk the first 100'+, rather than working up a 5-6' stem on spurs, or spur up on top-rope (feel free to sit down, and take your weight of the spurs, any time you want), this might be easier than plain spurs on a big trunk. You might have big stems dialed, however, I think it's harder on the body (wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees, maybe ankles).

Gaff covers while rope walking.

Haven't tried the spur- mounted ascender. I can see it adding to ergonomics.

I approach tree work with the more thinking/ planning/ calculating work plan, and least-effort. Save my body for the end of the day, tomorrow, and the future.

I'm still waiting for Mike to make them to fit Bashlin spurs

I haven't seen Mike on here in a while. I custom mounted them onto the DMM geckos. I needed to make a backing plate.

I don't know Bashlins but if you cld get him to send you ones with no holes drilled in them you might be able to just drill the holes.

I think they are great. I can go up the tree with no lanyard. Just as if I were free climbing on spikes.

For working down a spar, I really like the HH2. It is so compact that you can set it is some very favorable positions with a choked running bowline. I find that a rope walker system works flawlessly under it as well. As far as setting new TIPs it is no different then any other system. I do prefer my RW on wide trees where I will be doing a lot of rope running, it tracks slack thru the devise much smoother.

Agreed on the hh2 for spars. It's super compact and bomproof, it doesn't gobble up your slack when you don't want it to, and it's seamless to transition from ddrt to srt. Excellent for crane work too.
That said you can't just spur up and have the self belay feature like a mechanical device.
The spur mounted ascenders work so much better than a foot ascender and spurs. Well worth $150 in my opinion. I don't use gaff gaurds when rope walking, but you do need to be mindful to not stab yourself.
Bottom line is its nice to have options.

Different strokes for different folks. Nothing is as compact as an Akimbo. And if you haven't tried an adjustable bridge on a spar, you're missing out. I tend to prefer the Runner on the spar because it does gobble slack like a mofo...
