White Oak Bark Abnormality?

Looks to be the Aleurodiscus rather than Eutypa or Eutypella to me. Pronounciation is pretty phonetic.

I think @TCtreeswinger was answering @cory 's question about about maple limbs, not the OP's question about smooth patch on white oak with his Eutypella response...

What causes rot and bark loss around some portions of the base of many tulip trees?

The canopies usually look fully healthy

Is it actually decay, or just mature bark? Tulip trees change their bark appearance as they mature; around here we mostly see it at the base of the tree.

Definitely decay and some rot under the bark or missing bark.
