Groundie here getting into climbing, ive climbed a couple of trees now, and my boss has been letting me hang onto his spurs to practice with but id like to get my own pair. Ive narrowed it down to these 3 and wanted to get some opinions of people who've been doin this alot longer than i have.

ive got some older buckingham steel spurs with pole gaffs, other than the pads (Leather L pads) they are awesome, a little heavy, but for my level of climbing its not a huge deal

those buckingham alloy spurs look like they are nice, but the distel's (Seem like gecko's to me) seem to be super polular

Buckingham has long been a standard in the world of spurs, and they have a solid set of spurs.

That being said, the Edelrids look pretty good to me, and the Distels have a good reputation so far as I’m aware.

However, the most important thing is finding a set that fits you comfortably and works with your style, so I recommend trying them on before you buy a set. Do remember too, you don’t have to start with the fanciest set out there, a good set of basic spurs will take you a long way.

I can’t weigh in on those options you’ve listed, but I humbly suggest Bashlin aluminum.
I’ve worn steel Klein tree gaffs, steel Buckinghams with both permanent and replaceable tree gaffs, and Buckingham titaniums with pole gaffs.
Bashlin aluminum with tree gaffs are the best for me. Buckingham steel with permanent tree gaffs served me very well too, I just like the Bashlins better.

If I gotta pick one from your choices, I’d get the Bucks.

The Distels and Notch Geckos are pretty much the same. Im pretty sure Distel made the design for Notch or something to that affect

I wish i could try some on before i buy but there isnt a store anyhwere near me. And i get what your saying about not needing the fanciest set, thats why titanium isnt on my short list

Im pretty sure based on the responses so far i cant really go wrong with any of my choices

Fair enough, sometimes you can’t try them on.

I figured you took titanium and carbon fiber off your list because they’re unavailable these days, or very nearly so. I haven’t seen a pair of either on the shelf at Gap Arborist in many months, and last I asked Ray had no idea when they would be back in stock.

Gap is actually the closest store, at 2 1/2 hrs one way lol. I ordered all of my stuff so far online, most of it from Gap actually. Titanium and Carbon Fiber for me are just too expensive to justify right now.

That’s not that far, some guys drive further than that to drop in. If you’re ever in the area, definitely stop in. Hit me up too, maybe we can meet up for lunch. I’m always up for lunch, and I like putting faces to names as well.

What spurs are you currently using? What do you like/don't like about that set?

As far as not being able to try them on, I was in the same boat with buying a new saddle. Everywhere I checked offered returns as long as the product was still in new shape. Try them on in the shop and if you know it's not for you just ship them back. Check with your supplier about their return policy before you go that route.

To the OP: I am going to be “that guy” for a second. Hopefully you are practicing on trees that are being removed and not on living trees. Just double checking. On a helpful note, lots of good choices above.
Yep! Theres a few cherry and oaks on my property i need to remove, ive already had a majority taken out. Im very much aware of the damage that can be done

My only concern with the current version of the Bashlins is that they are no longer compatible with caddy pads, which IMHO are the most comfy pads available. Other than that the Bashlins are HIGHLY recommended.

The Edelrig have a very different feel from all other sets of spurs. Not sure how to describe it, but you either love it or hate it. My coworker loved them, I couldn’t spend 60 seconds in them.

Definitely don’t be afraid to try and return if they don’t feel good. There are height adjustments so you’ll want to dial that in of course. You could be spending many years on a pair so don’t settle for something that’s just pure pain.
