which boots should I get? + Climb right spur issue

I guess If I solve my pad problem with some foam pads or something, then raising them as well, then I don't have to have tall boots, unless they make custom height boots. I believe raising the pads would help me somewhat.

i wonder if the replacement foam for the cadillac pads would fit these. itd be easy to remove the glued on Velcro and glue on the foam pads

If you like lineman/logger style wesco is my choice try factory seconds on the site I wait for the right size n model then get a huge discount just paid $266 for $500 10"highliners brand new wt a few needle holes in the side of sole can't even see them

Another option for lineman boots, if you're on a budget or simply don't want to spend the big bucks until you're sure you want to go that route, is the 16" military issue lineman boots that have started flooding the market. They're showing up on feeBay and some boot outlets that do online sales. The last time around, these were made by Addison (USA) and are very well made, with steel toes and steel shank. They're no frills, unlined. I was able to find a pair in my size for $99.00 shipped. Not as comfortable as my old Hoffmans, let alone the Wescos, but with thick socks they're fine. Need to wear them around for a few days and get them loosened up and starting to break in before you climb in them.

Downside is, it's mostly oddball, small sizes that are available. I actually contacted some of the vendors selling them and asked about my size. One guy had a pair of 10-1/2 medium width on hand, even though they weren't listed in his ad. I'm not in them day in and day out, so I doubt if I will spend more money on the bigger name brand ones. I'm happy with these.

Just another option, if you live over here on the po' side of town.

Just talked to Matt at Spyder Mfg. They have some options to take care of this problem, the one I liked best is - they make the same pad that I got , only it has a longer shank for taller people. I am really exited about this, hopefully it solves the blistering problem. Also somewhere online I seen wesco's 20" boots. I am not sure if I can be comfortable in them becaus that is too close to the knee? what do you think?

Actually, I've never seen 20" lineman boots... had no idea they made them... but it sounds like they would allow the height increase of the shanks without the pad being above the top of the boot! I measured, and 20" would work for me, they would still be below the knee all around. But, Wesco... would have to be on sale!

Here is an update. Just bought Used 12" RED WING STEEL-TOE WATERPROOF THINSULATE LINEMAN LOGGER WORK BOOTS off ebay for $113 including shipping. I know this might be a mistake, because its a 12" , but a 20 inchers would be a lot more money, plus they are more time to put on and take of the foot and hotter in summer. I decided to go with the boot built to be used with spurs because I weigh 240lbs.

I also have the larger pads on the way , they should get about 2" closer to the knee, which should help relieve some pressure, I am not sure they will completely solve my problem, but I guess will see. I appreciate everyone's advice and input, pls keep it coming if you have more ideas, as I am not 100% sure the problem is solved.

I will let you know how it goes once I try it all out.

My Hoffmans fit perfectly in my Geckos. Which ones you got Chevyrob?

Agreed though, my Hoffmans aren't light by any means, and I would've thought they were heavier than the Airstreams.

I wear the 10" Dri Lines. The flat or center part of the Geckos was too small. The sides of my soles would sit on the angled part of the stirrup rather then flat with the bottom like they should. This was a bit awkward. I bought Titanium Bucks with velcro wraps and I'll never wear another set of Spurs again.

I got the Buckingham velcro lower straps in, today... swapped them out on my Climb Rights with tree spurs and the big Super Climber pads. I've got to say, these were worth the money. They're much faster to use and a lot more comfortable. I can also get them a lot tighter! Going to order another set for my Climb Rights with pole spurs, but going to try a different pad, the Weaver velcro wrap pads.

I have not been working on trees much lately. But I did not forget that I owe to let you know what I settled with and why. First off - about the boots, the used ones I got are much much better than what I had before, I really don't know if it gets any better on the tree with these, when I get down and start working on the ground, its a different story , but I am not complaining at all. Now the pads. Apparently Climb Right makes an XL version of the same pad, for taller people. so I tried that. It was better than the regular one, but with my weight , I was still getting sore. Recently I got to try the Buckingham pads , similar to Steel Support Pads by Weaver , and now I know what it means to be comfortable. By the way Weaver makes that pad to fit three different brands spikes including Climb Rights.

When I was buying the Climb rights, I thought I was getting something close to a Gekos , but for half price. It would've been nice if more details were on the description. First is that this is not for heavier people. Second for taller people there is this XL pad that should be used. Third - if going with any other type of pad XL steel sleeve should be used for taller people. They make those available from spyderman site.

that looks like a pad I tried. do you think the Weaver ones from wesspur will be as good? If you're a tall person , are you using the longer steel sleeves or just the stock ones? How tall are you? I'm trying to figure out if I will need the longer ones or will be okay with what I got.

I opted to not get the steel sleeves in mine, saved me money and dont see why they are necesary. The weaver pads look ok however ive never used them.. i got my buckingham velcro pads from tree stuff.com. check em out on theyre website

Are you refering to the steel insert in the buckingham pads or the the adjustable steel sleeve thats on the climb right spurs. I got confused sorry

the adjustable steel sleeve thats on the climb right spurs. they make a longer version for taller guys, but as far as I know they sell em with short ones.

Did you buy the pads with steel insert?

Just got the email from Mathew at Spyderman Manufacturing. I made the suggestions to him, and he says that they will try to work with retailers to make sure people have the right information when purchasing these.

Now I'm stuck with both regular and XL climb right pads that I would like to sell. they are used, but very good condition, probably excellent. I think they should work good for someone that is not overweight. Let me know if anyone is interested. Thanks to all that helped me solve my issues. This includes Mathew , special thanks to him.

a member name Keeth contacted me through pm about my pads. I thought this might ad to the conversation. here is a copy of that message. "
Just read your post again about the pads. I'm 6' 2" and 265 lbs without gear. When I got the X2 climbers (same as climb right) the pads did wear on me for a short time, but I moved then up a little more. After the neoprene in the padding got a little softer (broke-in) they became great. Probably took the equivalent of two weeks of climbing for this to happen. I have also been climbing for over 20 years, so my legs have enough muscle memory that I'm able to make adjustments in the way I stand on X2s vs. Klein vs. Buckinghams vs. Bashins (my favorite with the X2 pads). It might be worth toughing it out for one more week on them. Raise them just a little and don't put the velcro on so tight. You might be surprised!
