Where were you in '63?

'63? I was twenty five years from birth! But in my lifetime... the first big media was Rodney King and ensuing riots, OJ trial (and verdict) Waco and David Karesh, Oklahoma city bombing, uni bomber, can't forget Thriller! That was a great video:frenetico:
9/11 of course re-defined the West as well as the world with following Wars. Colin Powell at the UN, wow:buitre:
Why do we as a culture focus on negative?

I a pretty unaffected guy at this point in my life. After they shot Kennedy I decided school was not for me and geography became my favorite subject. I wanted to the see the world for myself. After traveling to many countries in my time off (winter) I can say the world has affected me in a good way.

911: I was standing by the kitchen window waiting to use the bathroom when I heard the first plane hit. I thought to myself I didn't realize they used dynamite in the city. When I was in the bathroom my gf said I had to come see this on the tv. It shocked me but even after going to the site and living in a ghost town for several weeks it didn't affect me in the long run. One of my friends narrowly escaped with his life. He doesn't feel too affected either.

The moon landing had a pleasant affect on me. Liked living during a time when such milestones where set.

Sure wish leaded gas could have been around longer.

man ya'll are old

Yup...every generation has markers to set their passing.

I remember the gathering of arborists to share a new knot that was setting the world afire. Someone had a copy of a third generation fax picture of a Blake's hitch. It took a round of phone calls...on landlines and actual face to face meeting to learn the knot. No mobile phones then.

I always thought I remembered walking down a hallway in HS in Peru Ill. after JFK was shot but it more likely RFK since I was just 14 then.

I was DEEPLY in love in Cincinnati Ohio in 66/67 to the Homecoming queen/dreamboat of the school...and we moved to Canada. I was devastated, but moved on with life. But then after a divorce by both of us we got back together at a reunion in '83 each of living on opposite coasts. Been married for 30 years now. Life is so full of surprises...most of em good imo.

911 I was driving to a job a distance away and had to pull over and I will never forget that moment. OJ decision...Justice System at its worst...but rivaling that now.

I was taught by some old schoolers, and have the utmost respect for ya'll. I can't imagine how cool it would have been to learn in the atmosphere of word of mouth/jamborees. It seems with all of the technology advancing arboriculture has stripped some of romanticism out of learning new techniques and rapid innovations. Don't get me wrong learning from this site, youtube, and all the other internet resources is rad. Just look at the f 8 revolver, rope wrench, hitch hiker, the chain link concept that turned into the zig zag, bull dog bone, haas, and all of this rapid fire advancements. This has all been done on the backs of you old farts, and thank you all.

Back on subject the biggest shiver down my spine was the "You are either with us, or against us." Still freaks me out.

Why do we remember it so well? I think it's just a mild form of post traumatic stress disorder
Oh, I don't know, I can vivid remember loosing my virginity, my daughters birth, my sons birth, the day I learned my son had leukemia and the day almost 6years later that he was pronounced in a permanent remission/cancer free. He is still that way 26 years later. I think it is the minds way of cataloging the important events of our lives, good and bad.

For better or worse? Personally I think she is a pig.

I think she is a pig as well. I can't stand her. I made that comment to put some attention to how the world is changing. I hear all of you older members talk so passionately about how certain things in our history changed who you are. You remember where you were, how you felt, when tragedy struck. You all have empathy. I feel people of that era, my grandfather's era, people seamed to feel more, have more pride for things.
It seams like the only news these days are all about our celebrities. No one really covers real news anymore. It's hard to stay connected. It's just garbage. Well main stream is garbage. Public radio is where I put my attention.

Driven by social media. Not at all personable.

"Why do we as a culture focus on negative?"

Very good question. The US is unique that way, ime. That pessimism bleeds into our work--trees are not assets, they're problems.

The decision to invade Iraq: my wife and I just looked at each other, our hearts sinking in that swirl of insanity.
