When do you make the call

Ed's too tough not to finish. He's like the the mailman, neither rain or snow, sleet or hail.....

LOL, nah just too lazy. I hate to have to climb the same tree twice.

X2 on the loop runners and being too lazy to climb the tree twice.

If it's raining and I'm already up there, I'll push through when needed. The crew rarely complains seeing that I'm the one dealing with the same crappy weather, just aloft. I find singing helps, mostly 80's, sometimes metal, usually Huey Lewis.

If we know it's going to rain or it is raining in the morning and we expect it to rain past noon, we don't work. Why, because the work isn't going anywhere and it can be done tomorrow when it's not crappy out. Besides, it takes forever to dry out these beautiful locks of hair. You guys know what I'm talking about......

Rain at the end of the day is better than rain at the start!
Its always a judgement call, finish vs safety, and dependant on the type of tree and work at hand.
Good idea to leave a throwline in the tree for the return visit...

I had a two day job, sub contracted to climb, others grounding etc...pi$$ing with rain in the morning, bucket truck on site, groundies there lansdcape director on site, I don't like working in the rain, Bermudians have a pathalogical aversion to it...
Anyway I waited for the worst to pass, only 2" of water running down the hill instead of 4",sucked it up, put on the rain gear and set to (I was in a bucket after all)...about two hours later at 10am the clouds cleared, the sun came out and life was good again, would have felt like a right numpty if I'd called it all off at 8am!!

We usually call it if it will rain throughout the day, pretty much based on the weather forecast.

Think about it: Your client is getting the shaft. The quality of the work drops huge when its wet out. I hate getting a job going, only to have it start raining in the middle then having to pull the plug. But, I would rather pull the plug and not finish the job, rather then (like Holly would do) stick it out and finish it up, and do a SUB PAR job that will reflect on our workmanship. You can talk your macho work in the rain talk all day to me, not gonna change my opinion of whats best for the job.

So holly what do you do when rain starts?

For work, I call down for my Jacket. Seeing as how the pants are already water proof. Also I ask for some loop runners to help with footing.

For the silly rec climbs and rec TCC I just skip it and drink beer.

Right. And I bet your quality of work drops right along with the rain.

Oh wait, no it doesn't, your super macho man! You get it done as good in the rain as you do when it's dry out!

Put your client in front of your ego, it pays in the end

Safety is the issue. The ground guys can be in a worse situation depending on terrain. It's not just about you the climber. Clean up is more difficult and there's a greater amount of damage done just in moving material out of the yard.

All the conditions both in and out of the tree need to factor in the decision making process. And yes, definitely take ego out of the equation.

For real???? I don't belive quality of work drops off. That is either in you or not. I could simplly say well your tired climber does shuddy work also, taking short cuts cuase he is done after 6 hours. Ones production will always drop and is understood. Most owners, in real life, not super buzz world, will want you to stick it out. Owners know they will lose 3-4 hours on a go back for 1-2 hours rain work.

Stop derailing with the raining in the morninbg talk all, this is about being on the job, it starts to rain, and country boy being to scared to climb anymore cuase he slipped. Stick to the topic.

if you feel that it is unsafe to finish a job for what ever reason I would say that before you leave the tree it is your responsibility to secure the job site by doing whatever is needed to achieve that. during a removal if it rains put on your spurs for security and make sure that the tree is safe to leave in the condition it is in.. also tape off the area and visit the neighbors to fore warn them that children should not be allowed near the site... be responsible....

pray for a good crop but keep hoeing

Yeah what he said!!!

A crew went back finished the job under the remaining time. Looking back i could have muscled through, but with a higher risk of property damage. I feel i made the right call. Just curious how others think in the same situation. Thanks for all the feedback!

Good thing you didn't come out to the NJ work day Holly, it rained and snowed!

You would have been way over your head

I am on topic. It rains, the tree gets slick, you loose ability to be safe and gain access to the ENDS of the limbs. Your going to leave your name on that job cuz you wanted to get it done and did not want to come back? I challenge you to come out here and climb a big wet live oak that you have to end weight. Good luck. If its a conifer, no prob, but getting around a big open canopy with slick limbs is not worth hanging on for, unless you have something to prove and do not mind bad workmanship.
