What slings do you recommend?

I got a call to lift a commercial A/C unit. Weighs 2000 lbs and will be placed on a roof.

I will be close to the building and the lift will be 3 stories.

Thanks in advance!

Kennedy wire and rope company makes flat webbing slings with eye on both ends that work well for this type of application. 2 inch or 3 inch wide should be more than enough for that lift ,and If not that brand ,that style seems most utilized from my experience doing hvac lifts. Make sure your insurance is updated with “lifting” classification on your policy ! :)

Is there a preferred length on those slings?

Longer is better deepening how big dimensionally the unit is . They can eat up slings length quick going under and up the sides. Have 30 footers and 20 footers, and have shackles to add sling if needed. I have sets of 6 foot 10 foot and 15 foot endless round slings for adding length, they’re versatile and can shackle them to my tree slings or flat webbings if need be. Keep the angles of the load up to hook or shackle as vertical as possible. Maybe spreader bar needed for certain jobs hopefully not this AC unit!

Wouldn't that be likely to dent the housing?
Possibly yes. But it’s better than sheet metal cutting a sling at height. A spreader bar should keep it away from denting the housing. Same note for textile slings. But personally around sharp corners it’s hard to beat chain for cut resistance.

I would use a spreader bar and a couple eye to eye webbing slings. When you get into rigging things other than tree parts, it’s nice to have options with extra slings, a variety of shackles, and a larger oval eye between the load hook and the rigging below. One can easily have too many things jammed into the hook, making the lift less than ideal.

Just saw this thread.

If you're a tree climber and you get a call to do industrial construction work like lifting things on a roof or working off the side of a building with a crane, you are not going to be using arborist rope slings. Especially if you plan on renting the crane, you are going to use the crane company's rigging slings and hardware.

Also remember that you will not be allowed to be hoisted onto the roof by the crane, as you now fall under OSHA construction regs.

AND don't forget that your tree insurance WILL NOT cover you for this work, without an expensive rider to your policy.

Also, to throw in 1 more thing, you also fall under Industrial Rope Access regs when you do this kind of work and plan on working on rope and you will need a 2-rope system and a full understanding of SPRAT/IRATA climbing techniques.

I was gonna start a new thread on slings but figure I’ll just ask in this thread
What’s everyone’s favorite tree crane slings for balancing picks.
I use the Amsteel 9/16 from wespur
The tuefulbeger mark Chisholm kit
All gear pro force 1/2 inch

tempted to try the max braid Yale premium from Gap for my next set or buy another set from wespur the amsteel 9/16 I like how the wLL on that set is very good on the website it looks to be higher than the 5/8 quantum X slings they offer there.

Quantum X are my favorite for brush followed by the Yale
I appreciate your input.. I never have used them in practice only held them in hand and the seem like they could Velcro to the bark. again I’ve never used them so maybe off with that assumption. Also I was surprised the 5/8 quantum’s had a lesser cow hitch working load limit than the amsteel sling wespur offers in 9/16 From what I gathered from their website. I like the name of the Quantum X though ;). What else am I missing, Steve ?

I haven't had a problem with them sticking to the bark even on rough bark trees. I'd have to revisit those numbers. I thought the X slings had the market on strength. Could very well be my ignorance on the newer slings. I have some Yale slings given to me to demo that are pretty solid but quite stiff until they get broken in. I'll take your work for it on the numbers. You seem much more current than me on that.

I just went off wespur website .. It was minor number difference from the 9/16 amsteel 2 and the 5/8 x sling.. which say coming back soon on website.
the 3/4 X are available , I’m sure are super strong, I’ve seen the landing zones and size picks those eastern pa boys can take :) I didn’t even consider those for my use. I don’t even come close to WLL on the smaller slings 90 percent of my lifts. I would say I like how wesspur shows wll tested on a cow hitch. Gap premium offering sling from Yale looks like I may give them a go too
They’re about 2 hours from me so I could go check em out.

I find most slings are way too long for our uses at least for brush picks. I'd prefer 2 18/20' and a 24/26'

The ones we have used are spliced by local professional from 3/4 rigging line (it’s been a few different particular brands over the years I forget what we are on now).

I usually use 2x 25’ and 1x 35’ and that gets me home safe, on time or early ;)

To advance the title thread little more I prefer as small diameter as possible sling for the rope I’m working with based on the lifts I’m making. It’s easier to work with thinner line for me. My fav is the pros force half inch until I need that higher working load limit.

Just make sure they're tagged. All rigging with cranes is required to be tagged per OSHA and AMSE. There are some really great slings out there that aren't tagged and shouldn't be in use.

All gear 9/16 here. No complaints except mine are too long lol. Only reason I went with all gear is they are like $60 cheaper per sling than anywhere online at my local arb supply shop. WLL seemed comparable enough to the other options. Good enough.

Crane operator we use gets his from some old school company in Virginia I think. They’re pretty beefy and insanely cheap comparatively. Can’t seem to find the link tho.

There's some companies down my way that make crane slings. HECO slings have been around since 1974. They're in Norfolk Virginia. Form what I have seen they do a lot of custom work. They don't have a website I can locate.
