What is THRIVE?

the tests that Smiley did had proper control groups. They would do like 50 two inch caliper october glory and just water,50 more would be sugar water and then 50 Super thrive. then they would check growth etc. they did this and compared to several other similar products. He apparently published results and nothing wowed them ?? take it for what its worth

So i can't get this off my mind: Who buys enough "superthrive" to keep this dude in business! There is a huge add on so many trade mags, that's gotta cost some considerable cabbage. The marketing is soooooo ridiculous that it makes no sense to use this stuff.

If you don't have an ad close, here are some gems:

"Unchallenged since 1940 as World's #1 Activator, Reviver, Trans/planter, Extra Grower, & Perfecter"
(i have no idea what any of that even means)

"Called "World's Best Product" by many leaders."
(really?)

"Science and Industry gold medal, World's Fair 1940, San Francisco."
(well, if it was that good in the '40s....)

I'm just curious on how this guy keeps going. He's turning 100 next week!

Theories?

Do you know more about using sugar water? IIRC, I'd heard recently about people using SW with transplants for root development. I know nothing about SW.

I thought I remember reading something in the "recent research" section of the Arborist News a few years back about using sugar water during tree transplants. I think it was favorable.

Superthrive belongs right alongside aerated compost tea as a ridiculous billable item.

I disagree. I am not too familiar with Superthrive, but we are getting great results with our compost tea. I think those of you who are poo-pooing compost teas and other new methods must ask yourself this question:

Why fertilize in the first place?

Does anyone here support the claim that synthetic fertilizers increase the life expectancy of trees?

Go to the woods and you will see proof that trees, when left alone, can live much much longer than trees in the urban environment. The question, it seems to me then, is how we can best mimic that environment! Synthetic fertilizers, while useful in specific situations, fail with regards to improving soil health as a general treatment.

While we don't have all of the answers yet, I believe compost teas, worm castings, and other natural fertilizers are headed in the right direction: promoting the best environments for trees, by improving soil health.
