I am quite good with climbing but lack a huge bit of knowledge with PHC. Now I need help with my crimson maple I planted at my own house. Pictures to follow.

There are some super small mushrooms growing around in the mulch as well. It has been a super wet spring and this tree was planted last fall.

Looks like some sun scald or possibly some fungal cankering causing that bark discoloration. Late season water stress last autumn may have also contributed. Cultural stress mgmt, especially watering when needed, could help it establish better but it seems to be leafing out quite well. Late freezes probably caused most leaf discoloration we're seeing but make sure the mulch isnt too deep and that water is getting through it to the soil and roots.

The little mushrooms in the mulch are likely a decomposer. Rake and turn the mulch if it bothers you. If too deep, a small amount or organic N and watering will help it break down or you could just remove it.

Which maple is that? It's tri-foliate like a paperback but bark looks more like a box elder. Newer cultivar that turns crimson?

Were the chips around the base green when you put them around the base of the tree? The decomposition process can draw nutrients out of the root zone and create other small problems as well that, when in collaboration with other things one might easily dismiss, can lead to a very slow establishment of a plant.

Ask every plant I planted when I moved in and had a big tree job around the corner from my house.

Thanks for the help guys. I will spread the chips around. I read study from University of Minnesota that stated it may need iron. Is this a possibility or before proceeding should I get a soil sample.

@JD3000 I believe you are correct that is a box elder. There were no leaves when I purchased it so I had to take them (nursery) at their word now with leaves yup I messed up and bought a box elder :(. I am also wondering if it could have been over watered could this be a possibility.

I guessed sensation maple. Nursery's can be a bummer. I wouldn't add anything without a proper soil analysis. Take the advice of the above geniuses and you should be gold.
