Well, I've just returned from a rather long trip with my friend Brian Noyes, but I wouldn't have missed one minute of it! First a trip to Dallas. The weather was a bit cool, but the trip was grand. Great food, fun with friends, the TXTCC was well run and fought for, the Mayor was brave and the food- did I mention the food? Great time for sure.
Next it was on to CA to meet up with my good friend Robert Phillips and others. The weather was great day one and then retreated to some less desirable tree-climbing weather. It didn't matter one bit! The whole reason for this trip was to pair up with some of the best climbers and arborists around (many of them TreeBuzz members) to prune the World Famous Tree House. This is a fantastic Redwood tree located on HWY 101 that is said to be over 250' tall, have a circumference of 101' and be listed in the Guiness Book of World Records as the tallest one-room house. And, to save the best for last, to be lead by "THE" Gerald Beranek. What a dream come true!
I grew up in this industry and have often dreamt of the day that I would get to see a real Redwood- much less climb one- much less prune one! This was my big chance. It was everything that I hoped it would be! Fantastic from the start!
I hardly have the time or words to even try to describe it. I only hope that others who were there (Jerry, Oxman, Klimbinfool, Treepreacher51,JPS,Roger Barnett,Snarf,Lance,Robert,...) will help out here and try to convey some of their thoughts and maybe even share some pics.
To me, this was an honor. It was a trip I've dreamed of since I was a boy. I am grateful to Jerry for giving me this oportunity to fulfill a goal. Working with so many other greats was just icing on the cake. This may have been the biggest tree pruning operation ever coordinated for one tree to date. Jerry showed his expertise and helped all of us enjoy a safe-wonderful experience none of us will ever forget. Here is a pic of Jerry in the tree. Thanks for the memories!
