On August 10th Andy Balika of Littleton Colorado died during a bike race in Steamboat Springs. The cause was arthesclerosis and a blocked artery. Andy was the owner of Root Down tree service in Littleton.
Andy was born with a heart defect that was never detected until after his death.
Andy started his career in trees with me in Durango back in 2001.
We maintained a working friendship and worked on many big projects together.
In addition to being an amazing climber and excellent business man Andy had the most excellent balance between work and fun. A phenomenal skier and bike rider , Andy was known to huck back flips off of cliffs on skis. Being on a bicycle was like second nature to Andy- he was always throwing little tricks or riding up the side of a log or rock.
Andy leaves behind his family that he was the provider for. His wife Karen and son Jett (12) . Like many of us Andy had no Life insurance policy. He was 45 years old and super fit. There is a go fund me page where we can help to support Andy's family until they figure out how to move on after this huge loss.
Sorry I don't have the link on here but if any of you homies want to help out just look up Andy Balika on go fund me.
And please in honor of Andy: love your family always make them top priority. Ride your bike. Ski often and with kids and with joy. Whenever possible pee off of the highest point you reach each day.
