"Well, sh*t... that wasn't what I expected.

I have been following this and the working in hell thread and really haven't had much to say about it. I guess i'm just used to the heat and humidity. I usually have one day at the beginning of the humid season that really takes its toll on me but after that i'm good to go. I have a big old starbucks on the way to work everyday. I always wear a camelback with ice water and every time I come out of the tree I chug a 33 oz bottle with mixed gatorade. I've eaten the same thing for lunch for 10 plus years and never change it. It's my perfect tree work lunch. I wear saw pants and boots. Moisture wicking shirts. I never ever take a break in the AC during lunch or something like that. My body is already used to the heat and the shade is just what I need. 99% of the time this is the effective hot weather groove I have. Occasionally get forearm cramps and a bit of a headache but mostly everything is good. On the way home I get a big iced coffee with an espresso shot in it to pick me back up. Its so funny how different peoples bodies respond to similar environmental conditions. Its the same at the fire department. Sometimes guys drop like flies fighting fire in the heat. It's never bothered me but then again I don't wan't to be one of those guys either. Don't get me wrong. It's awful but a mind over matter thing for me.

Special chair for firefighters that allows them to immerse lower arms in cool water. Blood vessels are of course nearest skin service at wrists.
About a month ago, I stopped wearing gloves--that's been a huge help. (What can I say? I noticed that Reg never wears them in his vids) I tell my guys to take them off while they're not handling rope. Naturally, some instances still require gloves.

Tell us about this lunch, Steve.

I didn;t say it was untrue.. just hard to believe... High schoo fotoball coach once told us that cold water didn;t do a significantly better a job of cooling the body than air temp water.. again hard to believe, might be true though. Then again we might not be comparing apples to apples.. I've run cold hose water over the forearms with little noticeable effect... but running cold water over a large portion of the upper body including head and neck is a different animal... Then again taking ah hour long lunch break in an air conditioned diner is a no brainer ...
From what I know, drinking ice water is not a great idea. Your body has to burn calories to heat the water up once its inside of you. Room temp is the way to go...

Really good multigrain bread. Extra crunchy peanut butter. Good apple jelly.
Greek yogurt
apple sauce
cozy shack rice pudding
apple or banana
crazins mixed with sunflower seeds.
Occasionally a left over sugary treat from the house but more often not.

Its perfect for me. They guys eat grease food. Even if the customer buys pizza for the crew I will only eat my packed lunch. I've eaten it for years and it is the perfect mix of sugar and protein and fresh fruit/salt. Lots of mushy cold stuff when i'm hot and can barely swallow the bread. Lots of pbj on the bread so it goes down well. Not the perfect nutrition but I'm going on over 10 years eating the exact lunch. Not too full afterwards and no after lunch dragging ass from a heavy lunch.

I always drink water as cold as I can get it. Plus that cold camel back resting on the middle of my back all day has to help my core temp somehow. Always gloves but stopped the suspender assembly on the MCRS for the summer. There's lots of material on it. Seems to have helped me quite a bit.
