Is this wear normal or do I have to take a 7014 rod to it?

I'd start thinking about it when chips or wood could start working their way between the disk and knives. Don't forget to put your lead as close ties the area your welding to avoid pitting the bearings.

Don't even worry about...you'll be done with that chipper before you even think that makes any difference what-so-ever...worry more about paint keeping it looking nice..

It is a normal occurrence, we rebuild and rebalance tons of them every year. We've even had them worn so bad that it got into the bolt holes for the knife bolts. If you do decide to build it up and grind it down yourself, I would recommend having it balanced afterward. It is a lot easier on the whole machine when the disk/drum is balanced. Less stress, broken welds, cracks, etc.

Doesn't take much to unbalance. I put a set of resharpened knives on a disc chipper where one or two were smaller than the others, like they had been ground down more than the others to repair the edge. You could see the unbalanced-ness while working, particularly when it was parked with any remote site lean
