Waterproof jacket

As you all probably know, in Holland it always starts to rain/it rains/it just has been raining.
So, with a very blurred mind and a very thick wallet, Jelte bought an Arc'teryx hardshell. At first I thought he was crazy spending that big bucks on a jacket and than starting using it for work. Climbing in the rain has never been my favorite occupation. Getting wet inside the rain wear gets me nowhere, but working without it is also a bummer.
What amazed me every day was that Jelte got out of the tree after an hard day's work in the rain, that he was DRY under that Arc'teryx hardshell.
You know what? That pissed me off big time

. I was wet from both the rain and the sweat that couldn't get through my rainwear.

Than there was the

This summer was the most wet summer in over 200 years

THAT'S IT. I had to get myself a real hardshell jacket.
My choice was a Bergans of Norway, Anatomic LV jacket. The reviews on that jacket where that good, that I thought 'if that jacket only lives up to half of what those people say, it's a bargain/ best deal ever'.

Well here is my review after the most wet summer ever/the most wet fall ever/the most wet winter ever.

In the morning before getting outdoors I put on my Bergans. I work the whole day in the rain. Get home in the evening and take off my jacket. DAMN, even though I sweat A LOT during my climbing, I AM DRY under that hardshell.
This gear rocks, It's by far the best gear I've ever bought. Really, cross my heart and hope to die.
But, I bought it in the summer. So when I fitted it on, it was a tight fit over my T shirt. During the wintertime it was a VERY tight fit with a fleece under the hardshell. Not that this bothered my movement in the jacket. It's very, very flexible, but very tight

.

So I went for another brand in a bigger size. This time it was a North Face Hy Vent DT Flight series. Not even half the price of the Bergans.
This jacket sucks. Hy Vent? Hy Vent? The only Hy Vent there is when I am wearing it, is somewhere in the region between my legstraps after a spicy meal

So what's the moral of this story?
If you want to stay dry in the wet without sweat draining out of your sleeves, go for the real stuff and pay the big bucks.
I went back to the shop where they sell the Bergans gear and I placed an order for a size large (for the cold summer nights with a fleece under it)

Are you sure these are hardshells? I had good luck (not climbing though) with a basalt 2 softshell by Sierra Designs. I used it extensively in Antartcia, other than collecting the smell of penguin crap, it was amazing. Better than all the gor-tex I have owned.

yeah man, worked in my Arcteryx today (beta jacket, theta pants, delta AR fleece and Danner goretex mountain light II boots) cant beat it. worth every friggin penny in heavy rain.
Bone dry and warm all day despite working in 6C and pouring rain.
oh, FWIW I did have pants on under the goretex, my regular arborwear stuff...

North Face seems to have given more thought to quantity over quality. I have a Mountain Hardwear Alchemy jacket for non-work situations that beats the crap out of the NF Apex Bionic I wear for work...

I agree, drop a little more at the register, what price can you put on your comfort?

softshells rock. period.

My Arc'teryx ski bibs have close to 100 days on them and are still darn near as good as new. There are now several companies that use three layer Gore XCR. As long as their workmanship and seam taping is as good as Arc'teryx, the garment will perform. North Face now has clothing just as good. My 4 yr old $465 NF jacket is Gore XCR, but it is 2 part GoreTex with a lining that doesn't breathe properly, so it gets somewhat wet from the inside. I would have returned it, but NF policy is to only refund 1/2 the price, and since I can again get pro deals, I'm good to go when it's time to get more duds.

There are a couple other waterproof breathable membranes that approach Gore XCR, but none better. Marmot's 2nd line Membrain has worked for me quite well! Helly Hansen's product is pretty good, as is Lowe Alpine's....

arcteryx theta jacket and beta pants here for heavy rain (with Danner mountain light II goretex boots), still as good as the day I bought them. I also got their delta AR fleece (AWESOME) and Sigma soft shell jacket. cant complain all around. the tech gear is MILES ahead of the regular raingear. but the price is tough to swallow at times but, so very worth it in comfort and useability.
