Wanted cheap broken Jet Step

I’m gathering components to make a thingy. I’m looking for essentially a functioning body of a notch jet step. I don’t think I need the fairleads, and I know I don’t need the straps! Essentially I need the functioning cam mechanism.

For inquiring minds I scored a pair of small sailboat two speed winches, without a self tailer. I’m brainstorming either a small porty like bollard off to the side, or a rope cam to at least take up tail slack or use in place of a cleat.

The other thought is to make a mini smart winch..

Seen the “ wincher” before? Just a tool that goes on standard sailing winches and makes them self tailing. I’ve never used one, so no idea how well they work, but looks good to me.
The pic doesn’t actually have it self tailing, maybe there’s a good video out there though.

While I don't have a broken jetstep... yet (the webbing is starting to come apart like). If it fails, I'll try and remember you're looking. Also would definitely love to see what you come up with.

Also in line with what jonny mentioned, some of the non self tailers can be upgraded too.

I know about the Barton winchers. And the great part is I have a pair of winches and they are also sold only as pairs. I’d still like the added security of a cammed rope grab if not for anything than backup.
I run into many trees that we rig with 3/8 to half inch, but it would be nice to have a little pick every once in a while.
I’m too much of a princess to pick with a 5:1 and porty.. the grcs would be way over kill for the application.
I’d just have a ratchet strap and essentially just copy the stein but with a sailboat winch instead.

I sort of borrowed on Stein’s idea too, with my old homemade bollard. Just a little 1000 lb boat trailer winch bolted to the side of the I beam. The winch handle won’t clear the bollard, so welded the nut in place and use a 15” ratchet and socket as a handle.
Put a prusik on the rope, clip the biner from the winch to the prusik, push the prusik up as high as you can reach, and start cranking.

You can probably guess that it’s nowhere near as fast and simple as a sailing winch, but it does some light lifting and pre-tension. Line feeds nicely right onto the bollard.

I don’t need it very often, I got a better and lighter FTC lowering device that I really like, but it’s handy sometimes.
