want to start learning to splice

I have watched with envy as several of my friends have taken the time to learn how to splice their own ropes, and I have been busy trying to grow a tree company and buying my products from others. Now all my guys are wanting to learn the basics together so we can learn from each other. I want to buy a basic splicing kit and a good complete book or video to get us started. I know that there are a hundred tricks to make it easier, but we need to learn the basics first. Any input would be helpful.

The best book I have seen for splicing is Brion Toss's "Basic Braided Splices". This book does not have the 16 strand splice in it, unfortunately, but if you get his video on eye splices you can see him demonstrate it there. Both are worth getting if you have the cash and are available on his website www.briontoss.com .

hey Noel. Jamin Mayer and myself have recently begun splicing (well, we spent the money for the kit) if you have any questions this website is the best place to ask them. Good luck friend. Make sure to let us know how its going

not so much training my crew as learning together. I think if I can get a couple of us good and excited about it, it will rub off on the rest. It's more about the journey, I guess. I'm reading and discovering that I should probably start with Brion Toss's arborist kit and the DVD to get us started, right?

Hi there,
16-strand is tough stuff, so you might want to start with slightly-less-challenging-but-still-frequently-useful rope, like covered HM, and you can practice this splice cheap, by substituting Dacron double-braid until you've done a few and are ready to try the real thing. As you'll see, splicing braided rope (no matter whose tools you are using) is largely about getting a feel for the stuff, how it behaves, what it doesn't like, how to make things move easier. The rest of it is coming to understand the measurements, and why they result in a good splice.
Have fun with it,
Brion Toss

Thanks for the response, Brion. I just got done checking out your website a while ago, and tried to give your office a ring, but it was probably after hours there. anyway, I am ready to throw down for a good setup to get started. I know I will need the arborist kit you have, plus some good whipping thread and needles, something to dip the ends of our beelines in, and what else? I'll probably try to call your office again tomorrow, or check back in here at some point. Look forward to chatting with one of the authorities on this topic.
