Pretty heavy load there my friend!

Here is a butternut ( walnut ) tree - very rare here! It was poisoned by the people across the street from the clients, because it was blocking their view of the lake. I salvaged the longest chunks I could get out of it just because it’s the only one in the area- very sad. 13148CDD-357E-4C69-9447-301AD1D98C7A.webpD887792B-5DC3-4F50-9AE1-064AF26BB350.webp

LOL...it is getting close. I saw over $13/BdFt a few years ago. People don't seem to understand that those logs are worth so much because they are RARE.

Yeah...almost all the mills want an even length plus 6-8" to trim off of the end. So if you bring them a log that is 12'4" they will scale it (and pay) as a 10' log.

I was in the logging industry in Vermont for a few years so I understand leaving trim for the mills (I think it’s robbery but who am I to judge). So when I mention an 8’er it’s always got at least 6” of trim many times more slightly because I don’t want to mess with an extra block on site.
I currently really only cut logs for a few furniture makers. They set up the portable mill, I load the logs on the mill after work and they take the wood. Normally we have a pre-arranged price for the logs. It’s actually kinda fun, something different!

Now where the $$ really is in black walnut stumps, and grafts to english walnut... Not much wood volume, but gun stocks and instruments is where it's at..

We took down a huge diameter butternut (dying, and failed). I called every mill within 200 miles, no one wanted to even consider it mostly because they didn't know what it was.. Sad.. I should see if it's still in log length and see if my groundie is interested in milling it up.

That’s funny! Not knowing what a butternut is? We get English walnut here a lot, yes different tree I know- I have 2x 60 footers on my property, the squirrels harvest the nuts for us. They stuff them everywhere! I went into my shed this spring to grab a blower and the little bastard filled the entire thing! All the way into the fan housing! The tube was stuffed! My wife and kids like walnuts, I’m allergic to them. Go figure? We also have an edible chestnut again, I don’t eat em! The girls put them on top the wood stove and eat em around Christmas time.

It's been quite a few years since I've heard of or seen Butternut ......
So many types of woods, hard and soft, are beautiful when viewing parallel grain.
Rub a little oil in and watch it pop.

It’s very interesting to me to see the price differences around the country. Here I’ve had my black walnut logs go as high as $12 a board foot delivered to the mill. Any walnut goes for $1 and up a bd/ft and they take down to 8” diameter

Yeah...veneer quality logs will go for $12 delivered (I've see as high as $13 on the stump...).
