Voice turn by turn GPS using iPhone

I don't want to jailbreak my iPhone yet.
My dashmounted GPS is dieing
It's time to update Gypsy

Does anyone use a voice GPS with iPhone? Tom Tom makes an app for this. The GPS is free but getting the voice turn by turn costs $10/month.

To get the same convenience in a dashmount unit I think it would cost more than $10/month. My dieing GPS cost me over $300 three years ago so the cost works out about the same.

I do.

It sucks.

Big time.

The battery life on the phone isn't strong enough. I tried to use it on my way to north Carolina last weekend. I had it on a charger and it STILL drained the battery. Complete waste of money. Now they do offer a tomtom car kit that boosts the gps ability. I don't own it but apparently it works pretty well.

I get almost all of my info from macrumors.com. They have reviews and what nots

Just buy a stand alone gps. So much better.

Our Garmins (which feature voice turns) cost a one time payment of $159 and have lasted well over a year. Familytree is right. Get a stand alone unit. Plus, the prices for units are likely to decrease in the future.

I have a four year old TomTom that's still kicking, but on occasion I use the VZ navigator app on my Palm for like $3.

I use Iphone gps for navigation and would like the turn by turn voiceover for those times i can't look and drive safely. Thanks I will check out the totmtom for this.

never had an issue with battery life when plugged in, with the old 3g or the new 3gs.

jailbreak--is that some texas slang? or mac technoh-jargon?

I would jailbreak that iphone asap! I have had my iphone for two+ years now, and have been jailbroke day one. I never understood why own something and not be able to modify it. I use the xGPS navigation app. It has voice turn by turn. I have two stand alone units and they almost never get used. I have never had a problem with battery life while plugged in. How could you? If your not happy with the iphone gps, what is the worst that could happen? Time wasted? Jailbreak that thing already....

Today Jim and I went to Micro Center to get a new MacBook for me. They had Garmnin Nuvi's on sale so I bought one.

Jailbreak, as I understand it, is going in and unlocking the phone so that non-Apple approved applications can be downloaded. Apple has a tight rein on what they approve for use in their systems. Good or bad...that isn't the issue, it's their policy.

And exactly why I hate apple products.

Here is how simple it is to work with Macs.

My old iBook died...after I dropped it twice on the monitor. Actually, Jim did some rebuilding but it is in rough shape. After buying the new one we wired them together, hit about ten keys and Apple went to work transferring ALL of my info from the old computer to this new one. I don't have to know anything about computers...or pay someone to configure the new computer.

People who don't like Apple products haven't had the joy of using a product that just does what it was designed to do. Would you buy a car that required you to be a trained mechanic in order to drive the car? Or, would you rather have one where all you have to do is put the key in, turn on the radio and hit the road, the mechanicals all take care of themselves.

Besides...it's easy to jailbreak an iPhone and then undo it if there is a warranty issue. It's not impossible, just something that I don't care to do.

Apple fan here too!

I did exactly what you were considering Tom & regretted it.

My dying Navman justified the $99 once off purchase of the TomTom app for the iphone. It must be a different set up in Australia, no month by month option...

Anyway, it absolutely sucks......................the battery.

Even plugged into the car charger. And the phone gets so hot you can hardly hold it against bare skin. That can't be good for the life expectancy off the phone.
