If anyone lives out near the redwoods or is familiar with the area, is Crescent City a good place to stay in a lodge/hotel as a base to see the best parks for a family vacation? Or where else would be a good option?

Thanks for any advice!

I know this subject well, and will give you a full write up after I get some coffee going here. Let me start by asking how you will be travelling. Road trip, or flying and renting a car?

Mostly just visiting the parks/trees & ocean and a walkable town to stay in would be nice.
So, long story short, I think Arcata is probably what you're after; very central to the different redwood areas. How long will you guys be in the area? Most of the towns aren't much to walk around in, except Arcata, but if you're into staying in a few different places during your stay, it can help set you up to maximize time in different groves/parks.

Arcata will have the best balance of accomodations, food, walkability, centrality to the parks, walkability.

I like staying Friday night at the Hotel Arcata so that you can step out the front door into the Saturday farmers market. I think it might be too early in the season, but if you are planning ahead, it's worth considering. It's one of the best markets I have ever seen, or at least it was when I was living there.

I completely agree with Matias on this, Arcata is what you want. There is an old hotel right on the town square, it's a bit funky but a cool place to stay. Great little cafe on the square, great food and coffee in general in that whole area, so many nice markets. Eureka has some cool historic neighborhoods to see as well but is generally more sketch. I definitely wouldn't stay in Crescent City myself. But some people have recommended the casino hotel up there. I really love Trinidad as well but not much to walk around to, better lodgings though. For trees Prairie Creek is my favorite but Avenue of the Giants is also so so nice. Check out Bull Creek and Rockefeller Grove for sure. Definitely worth a drive out to Ferndale as well, lots of nice Victorians there. Hope you have a great trip, one of the nicest parts of the country imo.

Lots of excellent advice here. all those are my favorite spots too. Rockefeller picked a good one to put his name on for sure.

Beautiful. Didn't see you recommended the Hotel Arcata before I wrote that reply!

Some years back we drove the coast highway with my family. Best recollection is camping in the state park (Humboldt? forestry tycoon) and it's always cool to drive the side road right up against the tree trunks. There's also the drive thru tree at the top/north end of the 101(?) We drove past a few downed used-to-be-drive-thru's. There was a paid entrance park we ran out of time for too. Don't know the exact proximity to Mount St Helens but we stopped there too.
