ValComm 900/face shield

Been here much more than a while

Just purchased a set of these from Earmark and requested the Petzl helmet attachment. These appear to be very nice units. I have not attached them to the helmet yets because there appears to be no place to attached a faceshield.

At least there are none of the typical hardpoints for popping in the faceshield we currently use. There does appear to be a slot in the attachment point, but I have no idea if this is for a faceshield or not.

Can anybody help me out with getting a faceshield attached to these units?

The faceshield attaches to the helmet not these muffs. I ran a test on these today for Steve @ Earmark and it wont work unfortunately. There brackets are not manufactured with a slot in them to pass the screen through. The sheild should still line up as normal on a Petzl helmet though!

What faceshield are you using on a Petzl helmet that attaches to the helmet and not the earmuffs?

Ours attach to the earmuffs.

So do you guys not use faceshields? The other thing we are noticing is that it appears that the faceshield and mic may have a conflict of interest in space.

So it appears that this setup can't work with a faceshield.

We played around with a couple of different combinations and settled on this modification. It required drilling an 1/8" hole in a preexisting indent (visible in the second photo) to reposition the faceshield from the earmuffs to the helmet and position the faceshield allowing the mic to be in the proper position which could not be done without this mod.

This does appear to work well and was easily accomplished.

The above comments are from David.

I would add that I am disappointed a bit in the customer service aspect from Earmark. I specifically asked prior to ordering these units if they had a return policy in case we were not satisfied. The rep did waffle a bit at first saying that it had never come up. But then did say that they could be returned. The receipt that I got in the mail says explicitly "No returns". I feel he should have been a bit more forthcoming about their company policy.

Being fair, I had not challenged this at this point as we were very motivated in making this work. Wearing a faceshield for me is mandatory while chipping or stumpgrinding. Perhaps in your situation, Boston Bull, the people communicating are not in those positions. With David and I being the sole crew members, it is imperative that communication is available at all times and we have definitely felt the need and lack. We have tried many cheaper systems in the past and none have been satisfactory.

We will let everyone know how this sytem works for us.

I have never had a problem with customer service as a dealer. I have had a set crap out on me and fixed at no charge! And they are always speedy with them.

Let me know how everything goes. I am going to have the owners up to the shop soon when the new Kask comes out, and I will also show them this mod you did and see if they can make a slot for the screen.

You will not be disappointed in these!

The ONLY problem I have noticed, is the same as all muffs on wire brackets, they tend to slip down the wire bracket as they get worn and old. This causing pressure on the top of your ear. We solved this by using a zip tie to keep them up in the proper place. Until they can mount them on muff brackets like the ones pictured below, they will always slip down with age.
