Tying the VT

[ QUOTE ]
...it occurred to me that it would be exactly the same thing if you just make six (or so) wraps around the climbing line and terminate the ends.

Ahhh, I see the difference this time.

That difference makes it a different knot. You have described the Valdotain. The Vt, Valdotain tresse, is a similar, but different, knot. More here:

on how to distinguish them, how to tie them, and how they function.

Hey Moss, thanks for posting the pics. Is that a double overhand noose that you tie in your climb line? Do you have trouble with the noose knots tightening up on your 'biner, making it difficult to install/remove the cord? I've got 24 years of tautlining behind me, and am interested in giving these new systems a shot. I am just trying to figure out which one to try first.

Do most of you eye-to-eye guys prefer spliced I-2-I's or do the knotted ones perform just as well?

Ye'r welcome. I prefer the double overhand noose to a splice, I like the way the noose knots cinch on the biner, prevents the eyes from moving around. Not a problem taking the eyes on and off the biner. The performance otherwise is very good. Hitches like the Knut are easier to tie with spliced eyes. VT or XT are no problemo with noose knots.

Best to start with noose knots eyes anyway so you can figure out how long you like your hitch cord, then you can get a spliced eye-to-eye made to the length that works best for you if you decide to go that route.
