Tsunami / World Record Hemlock

Going to post short - internet is dragging-its- speed here in Orick, CA. Just found a new record breaking world's tallest western hemlock today. Had to do a preliminary single-handed, and figured at least 270 to 274 possible.

I happened to find out this morning that Prof. Sillett was in the park, and tracked him down like 5 minutes before he left. Asked if he had an inkling to go look at the tree and confirm ID. I think he was wondering if it might really be a Sitka spruce.

By the way - it's name is "Tsunami" after the wave that hit this area yesterday.

Long story short, we went to the tree - it is a hemlock - and Sillett had an Impulse Laser. Together, we got 82.7 meters, just over 271 feet. Don't have a good photo yet. Plan to go back tomorrow, and I think Michael Taylor will be coming too. It's worth a double measure and he has an Impulse laser too. This hemlock is even taller than the pine record breakers Taylor and I found in January, the tallest of which was just over 268 feet. Can't wait to get back to my FIOS internet speed and my home desktop computer big screen tomorrow night.

EDIT: Added photo. After Taylor's measure, and comparison with Sillett's the consensus appears to be 82.9 meters ---- 271.98 feet. A few folks accompanied us this morning.

Thats pretty cool! What are the chances of Sillett just happening to be there that day.

The odds are slightly greater than him happening to be there on the same morning I just happened to be putting my boots on along the parkway to see him drive into the park.

BTW - the lighting from the top side was not good at all for a pic. I just got a dark outline yesterday. Here is a stitch from about 10 frames today. Still darkens at the top, but at least shows the basic form.

It does not lean or bend at all. The stitch did that. The tree is straight as an arrow.

The fir behind it is no slouch.

Oh yeah, far as hemlocks go there is a real dandy at the skunk cabbage trail head parking lot. Biggest I've seen throughout the park.

I take some pics next time I'm there.

October 2011 Update

While out with Ascending the Giants the other day, to measure the tallest pine tree, Michael Taylor told me that Chris Atkins just recently found another super tall Western Hemlock.

Gave Chris a call tonight, and he confirmed 270 feet ("on the nose"). Same region - Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park.

Chris said he has found nothing between like 259 feet and the 270-range. So here all of a sudden we have bridged the entire 260 foot range with those two 270 footers.

November 2014 ... new measurement ...

273.42 ft.

One more that grew the past couple years despite low rainfall in Nor Cal.

Not sure where the OP image went, but here's the lower trunk. The woman is standing at the trunks low grade point .... the hillside is steep.
