truck fire

My dump truck caught fire today and is now ready for the scrap pile. I'll know more as time goes by as to the potential causes... one friend of mine thinks that a fuel line ruptured and splashed gas on the exhaust manifold. The whole truck was gone in under 10 min. With the location and degree of the fire, all I was able to do was stand there and watch it burn.

Luckily I didn't have much equipment in the truck at the time of the fire. I did lose a phone in there (luckily not my work phone) and 1 rope, plus a couple of other minor things. Toolbox, and lord knows what else. I had turned the truck off, but didn't pull the keys out of the ignition... the full sized, non locking crab melted, but every key that I had hanging on it was salvaged.

If your lucky the insurance payout will be more then the value of the truck. Good news is there's some deals to be had!

Good luck in your hunt for a replacement.

Nearly had that happen to one of my trucks twice! Fortunatly (or un fortunatly) we had a fire extinguisher handy. The crew calls it the fire truck now:) Hope you get a nice truck outta the deal

was it a ford? i lost one of my bucket trucks the same way a few months ago.total loss ..actually pull off the road and onto the ramp at the firehouse and still lost the whole rig. insurance paid for about a 1/4 of the replacement cost.glad you made it out ok..mine blew up pretty fast,my passanger actually jumped out the window when the flames came out from under the dash.

Back in the booming times of the early 90's , we were clearing land in Elverson PA. , middle of nowhere , pack a lunch job . 100 degrees and humidity , the loader catches on fire ,after lunch . The thing is blazing out the back , we put it out with the 5 gallon water cooler. Loader saved but we were done with water and the loader. I've been through a bunch of fires but I'll never forget that one . Fire ain't(it's a word) no joke . I've seen pickup trucks burn to nothing in minutes , crazy . The coil melts and slowly burns the rubber and the oil drip cathes and than you pull over and ...goodbye.

No fire insurance on the truck.

Crap! Does that mean you have to take the loss?

I wonder if the loss is tax deductible.

I take the loss. Oh well. Yes it was a Ford BTW.

I'd like to ask for everybody's opinion on this though...

Was working in another town yesterday and was on my way back when this happened.
Monday I was supposed to work in this same town with a friend of mine on this very job, but on the way to the job his truck broke down on the side of the road and we had to get his rig towed / hauled to get a new fuel pump.
2 months ago I worked in the same town, got stuck in a driveway, and got a ticket on the way back to the yard..
Did a hauling job there in the fall, told a friend on the way down that there would be problems... sure enough the fuel pump blew after we got to the job.
Did a couple of other hauling jobs there during the fall and ran into various weather troubles in town... start the job and the rain would come.
In the summer I did a little air spade work... picked up a NASTY case of PI off of the tree.
Before that I ground a couple of stumps in the town, the first stump in town I busted a hydraulic line on the machine. Came back to it later on, whiped out 2 teeth.
Last winter I worked there, a friend of mine helped me for a little while, he got a flat in one of the driveways. I had misc. problems with the customers... and the log truck driver ripped me off.

I do jobs in other towns, closer to home, farther from home, makes no difference... haul larger loads, bigger jobs, worse locations for stumps, etc. etc. for the most part I have a good track record. Head into this 1 town and problems galore.

Superstitions can be very accurate, avoid the bad luck town.

As for the truck? It's really only superficial, at least you got outta there with your skin.

When I was young, my Mom would drive us up to Hampton Beach NH in the summers. We broke down in Topsfield, MA at least three times in a couple different cars. I'm always superstitious of Topsfield now!

As for the truck fire, I had a fire in my heater core from debris going down the vent by the windshield ('78 Ford)... Luckily I had a fire extinguisher in the truck, I was able to put it out quickly. I was driving along, thinking that I was getting closer and closer to someone burning leaves in their yard, when flames shot up out of the defroster! Yikes!
