Wtf, Levi? Is that all anyone seems to give a shit about? Free plane tickets? Jesus Christ. Most of everyone had the opportunity to go and voice their concerns, or ask their questions. Very very few took it. I can think of two who actually put these companies on the spot. I'm more the type to stay quiet and take things in. I was surprised at how the majority of these questions and concerns were dealt with or answered. I'm no ones shill. I can however, admit that maybe I was hasty in painting new canvases with old brushes.I say keep kickin ass Thomas, don't worry about this dogpile. It takes a lot of balls to bring a new product to the market or to publish an article. I agree that there is a bit of a shill mentality happening here. It's funny how just a few months ago Sherril was lame and now it's okay or maybe even cool on the buzz-o-meter. Why? Because Nick said it was all good and a bunch of dudes got free plane tickets? That is lame as hell fellas....
Thomas, I remember reading an article you wrote on work positioning when I was first starting out and I remember two things that you wrote on an almost daily basis. Thanks man.
You're right, I had the opportunity to go and chose not too. There were several valid reasons for my choice.
-I have a family and would much rather spend time with them than go and visit someone who is trying to sell me something. Especially in the SE USA.
-When I was considering going I had it in mind to be a rebel rouser of sorts. That would not have been productive and possibly I would have gotten beat up.
You can't deny that the shift of general sentiment toward st on the buzz has changed dramatically in the past few months. I'm not saying that's bad, just interesting at all.
In regards to Thomas I am just sick of all of the negativity surrounding him. Sure he keeps asking for more shit over and over and over again. That doesn't mean that folks have to humor his solicitations for insult over and over and over again.... Well, maybe it does, I just don't get it.
What's lame as hell is assuming free plane tickets or one person are enough to buy loyalty. I know at least for Josh and myself it was 10 hours each way spent in airports and on planes. That's not fun and not something anyone does just because they think they may get a few goodies or get to brag about hanging with the big wigs. Those who went did so because they were interested, they cared, and they wanted information. You, and many others, were granted that same opportunity and chose to decline, yet you don't hear the dozen of us that went saying you lot are disinterested, uncaring, and misinformed. Call it a shill if you like, but to me flying in 13 random people who represent a couple thousand on an obscure internet forum, who represent tens of thousands across the country doesn't seem a very effective way of brainwashing an entire industry. I'm going to be 100% honest...I went because it was a free trip to North Carolina...period. And that was why I stayed a few extra days. The fact that I got to tour an arborist supplier warehouse and talk to some others in the industry was a bonus, not the reason. I've never shopped with Sherrill before, and I don't know that I will in the future, and I'm certainly not going to tell others that it's THE place to go. But from what I saw and heard they deserve a chance to make things right from their past mistakes (which I know very little about). Or, you can be like some others and continue to hold a grudge for the rest of your life over some childish nonsense, shove your head in the sand, and be oblivious to the positive changes that are happening.I agree that there is a bit of a shill mentality happening here. Sorry Levi, wasn't targeting you specifically when I made the grudge comment. I went off on a rant and the "you" was directed at those who are too stubborn or still pouting about old wounds. My bad.You are mistaken on one point though, I do not hold a grudge against st, nor have I ever. I just never was keen on their inventory although I used to look at their knot page once in awhile. The one time I got gear from them through a company I used to work for I ordered a tight eye splice and got one of those big loosey goosey girth hitch eyes... easy mistake but damn, who wants that?![]()
I had a similar feeling about Nick before I met him in person. His harsh words about Sherrill tree and Toby in particular were unprofessional. Especially since Sean was not trying to defend past grievances and he was already getting enough flack from us. I think that I understand now why Sherrill kept him. First of all he is a very hard worker with high energy, he is enthusiastic about trees and advances in arb technology, he understands the culture, he is a major part of TreeStuff's support of the little guy who couldn't afford a patent. He got new tools to us fast. he is a major part of the reason TreeStuff did so well. Oh yeah, and pm me Nick if you have any free stuff you want to send my way.And that quote above reflects in a nutshell my lasting impression of the TreeStuff booth at TCI Expo this year.
Nick, I think you will be happier if and when doing treework full time again.
It was a joy (bittersweet almost) to see Luke and Erin again, but I felt like a salmon who had swum upstream to die. Baltimore TCI Expo is where we started doing business, but it has come to an end for me.
Saturday morning, the TS booth had the feel of a funeral parlour, with Nick as the director. Bad vibe, imo. Mebbe youse all were just tired, whatever. Gotta go the distance, guys. We drove almost twelve hours each way to attend Expo.
And the Sherrill booth at Expo, I didn't get it. Yeah, they had tons of employees for attendees to chat with, and products to view, but why not sell gear on the floor like some of your busy competitors? Your "flash sales" were nothing like last year, either. I think if you are gonna bring a herd of employees to your booth, why not have products there to sell for attendees to buy? And acquire new customers that way. And service your existing customers? And mebbe give out some free shirts while you're at it...
It is interesting how people get different impressions. TreeStuff wasn't "stuck in a corner". They were ON a corner, which gave their booth exposure from two sides. I walked by several times on Thursday and Friday to say hi to Nick as David and I both consider him a personal friend, not just someone we buy equipment from. The booth was always busy and Nick was 3 deep in people. Didn't want to disturb the flow, so will send him a hello from here.

Sherrilltree prefers profit over tree worker safety. More style equals more sales. Liars and loosers. TreeStuff is plan B when they get sued for life lost because they refuse to adhere to industry standards.
Here are pics of 3 of my harnesses Skylotec, edelrid and petzl. Petzl being the worst and most disgusting due to fact the metal rusts and rusts being top of the list most destructive things to textiles. Any way rust asiide all three manufacturers use a stitch colour different then the harness colour.
Besides that Sherrill and @bonner1040 are stupid to believe a ball or bag is a better tool than a bullet or torpedo. War with fuckincannon balls over proper artillery.. Again these losers choose profit over providing the best tool to their client.
