LAKELAND, FL -- Fire crews from Polk County Fire Rescue were sent to a home in the 5600 block of Oakwood Knoll Drive Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. for a report of a tree on a house. Once they arrived and assessed the situation they found one person trapped by the tree and another hurt.
Relatives of the injured men, one 19 and the other 17 say the younger man was hit on the head by the falling tree. The other teen was trapped in the bed from the debris.
Rescue workers were not able to yank the heavy tree off of the house in order to free the man for concern the home would collapse if they tried to cut the tree. The 18 rescuers worked to cut away the mattress underneath the trapped man and lower him to safety.
Crews were able to remove the teen and transport him to an area hospital. His condition was not released.
Initial reports indicate high winds were responsible for knocking the tree over.
